Here's Pet Art For You

K Senthil Ram has always been a great animal lover. So, when his art gallery cum studio turned two recently, he came up with an initiative that would combine his love for animals with his passion for art. At Splatter Studio, pet lovers can now not only get portraits of their furry friends done but also rest assured that a part of the proceeds will go towards their favourite animal-friendly charity.

"We have been predominantly focusing on art-related activities such as customised and commissioned art work, wall murals, art classes and workshops," says Senthil, director of Splatter Studio at Adyar in Chennai, adding that the studio began offering pet art two months ago.

"I am a big pet lover. Though I have a few dogs, I have lost a few over the years," he says. "At my studio, quite a few people approach us to do portraits of deceased relatives and loved ones. So I thought why not offer the same service for pets. For any pet lover, the pet becomes an integral part of the family." So people can now order custom pet portraits. "We have different options - you can get a custom portrait, caricature, illustration or pencil sketches; all you have to do is give a photograph of your pet," says Senthil, who has three to four artists who specialise in pet art.

What's more, it is very pocket-friendly. "An A4 pencil sketch would cost Rs 500, while a customised oil portrait that is 2ft X 2ft would cost about Rs 5,000, though it all depends on the size, detail, etc," he says.

Though pet art is still at a nascent stage, there is a demand for it, he feels. "Last week we were at an event happening on the East Coast Road that aimed at raising funds for animals, and a lot of pet lovers dropped by; we churned out many pencil sketches," says Senthil, adding that he hopes to reach out to a wider audience through a newly launched website, www.splatterstudio.in, which is more like an online art and craft gallery.
