Coffee With Your Furry Friend

In 2004, Japan opened its first cat café in Osaka. Now, every corner of the world boasts of a cat café, with at least 39 in Japan alone! Here are some more intriguing animal cafes around the world where you can sit, sip and snuggle

HARRY, TOKYO

Customers at Harry — a play on harinezumi, the Japanese word for hedgehog — line up to spend time with 20 to 30 hedgehogs of different breeds. For ¥1,000 on weekdays and ¥1,300 on holidays you can play and cuddle (carefully) the prickly mammals.

SAKURAGOAKA CAFÉ, TOKYO, JAPAN

When it comes to animal cafes, you can’t bleat, oops beat this one! It owes its business to Chocolat and Sakura, the resident goats. Guests can dine on food and drinks inside the goat-themed restaurant and take pictures of the pair. You can even buy snacks for them and if you feel like it, take them for a walk.

THE DOG CAFÉ, LOS ANGELES, USA

In a bid to promote adoption, The Dog Café opened its doors in Los Angeles. The concept: for $10 an hour, you can grab a cup of coffee and spend time playing with adoptable dogs. It’s more about the dogs and less about the coffee.

KOTORI CAFÉ, TOKYO, JAPAN

This one has gone to the birds, literally. Over 25 feathered friends chirp along as you sip your afternoon latte. The birds are more for looking at than petting but some will happily sit on your finger and nibble at you! The cafe also has a wide range of cute bird-inspired goodies for you to purchase as a souvenir.

THANKS NATURE CAFÉ, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

This is not a wild sheep chase. Here you can sup with the sheep, provided they can pencil you in to their busy schedule. Rservations are made through their Facebook page and the company notifies customers when the sheep will be free to welcome them.

LITTLE ZOO CAFÉ, BANGKOK, THAILAND

This café has the animal rights activists up in arms, thanks to the nature of exotic animals like fennec foxes and meerkats offered for petting. The café makes sure you get only ten minutes with the animals — enough for a photo/video op. Also Café Little Zoo in Tokyo offers playtime with a variety of critters from snakes, owls, turtles, frogs and eagles.

FUKURO SABO OWL CAFÉ, TOKYO, JAPAN

Here, customers can observe the owls, take pictures and for an additional cost, hold and pet owls. The owner and bird lover, Shusaua Yasu is also outspoken on the subject of ethics and doesn’t give a hoot what critics say. Owls well that ends well!
