5 Common Dreams And What They Mean

The art of decoding dreams has been around for centuries. In most cases, the dreams are a representation of the subconscious mind and with a little analysis, are able to make sense of the predicaments we face. '

I started keeping a 'dream diary' after a few recurrent dreams began to bother me and my dreams seemed to become too real - which is called lucid dreams. It is hard to remember a dream after you have woken up, which is why if you maintain a dream diary and keep it close at hand when you sleep, it is easier to jot down details. There are many benefits of keeping a dream diary - the biggest one is being able to follow your subconscious growth over time.
Let us look at some common dream topics that we tend to encounter when we sleep and what they mean...

Walking up or down a staircase

The appearance of a staircase, usually a spiral one, is one of the most common dreams in India. The dream is fairly simple one to decode and links directly with your direction on the staircase - if you are walking up the staircase easily then you are "moving up in life", if you have heavy feet or are unable to climb up the stairs in your dreams, it means you are facing trouble with hierarchy in real life. Walking down the staircase, means searching for "deeper meaning in life".

Falling off a cliff

Surprisingly, this is not just another common dream, it is in fact one of the most common recurrent dreams. Priya Tripathy, a traveller based out of Gurgaon says, "Sometimes when I oversleep, I get this strange feeling of wind and suddenly I feel myself lurching off a cliff and falling. It is so scary that I wake up." Psychologists believe that dreams of falling are very common to those suffering from depression. It is a signal that you are heading towards a dead end and you should alter course in life.

Snakes in a dream

A fairly common dream in India, snakes make a complex subject. If you see a snake passing you by, it means that you are not paying attention to possible vicious company. Your subconscious is trying to warn you that a friend is in fact an enemy. Fighting off a snake is a sign of you taking on an enemy, while being attacked by a snake or by many snakes at once is a bad omen.

Losing your way in the dream

This can be a very disturbing dream for some. Bengaluru-based Pipi Chakravarty says, "I keep dreaming that I have set out on a journey but then I lose my way. I try hard to remember where I was but I just cannot find my way back to where I was or remember where I wanted to go." A simple interpretation of the dream states that the dreamer is simply unable to find a direction to their waking life or feels misguided in their life.

Being chased by someone or something

I hate waking up exhausted from my sleep but this dream tends to do exactly that. In such dreams, the scenario often features you being pursued by an attacker, an animal, a monster or an unknown figure, who wants to hurt or possibly kill you. The interpretation of the dream is the inability to confront an enemy or oppressor.
