Marin Tops Badminton League Auctions

Marin became the costliest buy in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) auction for players held here on Wednesday .

The Hyderabad Hunters bought the Spaniard for Rs.61.5 lakh while the tag of the second most expensive player went to South Korean woman shuttler Sung Ji Hyun after Mumbai Rockets promised to pay her Rs. 60 lakh.

Delhi Acers bought Denmark's Jan `O' Jorgensen for Rs.59 lakh at the auction and the fourth slot went to Awadhe Warriors' K Srikanth. The team owned by Sahara spent Rs 51lakh on India's top-ranked men's player. Rio Olympics silver medallist Sindhu went to Chennai Smashers for Rs 39 lakh, which was way below expectations.

However, Sindhu being Sindhu, didn't let it bother her. She was all smiles as she walked into a round-table impromptu press meet. “I am not disappointed at all,“ she told the media persons. With the auction over, Sindhu is looking forward to a rematch with Marin. “It will be a good contest and I am quite excited to be a part of the league again. Last two months have been hectic but I am back on the court and in my elements,“ she said, keeping her chin up.

Having shown her class on the biggest stage of the world, Sindhu doesn't fear competition and is not bothered about “who gets what“ at the auction. Therefore, the question about her compatriot Saina Nehwal being sold for just Rs.33 lakh to Lucknow's Awadhe Warriors failed to elicit a response.Former world No.1Saina, who has just recovered from an injury , surprisingly went unsold in the bidding for Icon players, and was picked in the next round.

As many as154 players went under the hammer, the list including 16 Olympic medallists. Fifty of them were acquired by the six teams in the fray who had a kitty of Rs 1.93 crore each.

The base price for the top players, the Icons, was Rs 33 lakh while the next best were earmarked at Rs 17 lakh. Each team could ac quire a maximum of 10 players, including 6 foreigners.

Renowned auctioneer Bob Hayton from United Kingdom conducted the proceedings, but unlike IPL, there was live no TV coverage of the event. “It would have been good if the auction was beamed live on TV ,“ India's national coach P Gopichand said. - TNN
