Bond-ing With Ruskin

Did you know which books Ruskin Bond loved as a youngster? Well, on his 83rd birthday, he elaborates on the many books that he read in his childhood and mentions those that have helped him shape his personality. 'Confessions of a Book Lover', Bond's upcoming book offers a window to what one would usually find on his bookshelf.

So, what were his inspirations? In his own words, he enjoyed reading 'Nicholas Nickleby', 'Oliver Twist', 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'The Sketches' by Boz. His favourite was Nickleby, full of humour, pathos and memorable scenes. "I could identify with Nicholas in the same way that I could identify with David Copperfield; both sensitive young men trying to make their way in the literary or theatrical world, and encountering the most extraordinary characters along the way.

On bonding with his dad:  In yet another book, 'Looking for the Rainbow: My Years with Daddy', he pays tribute to his father. "I have written about him before, but never at length, and I thought it was time to thank him in the best possible way through a story woven around the events of the memorable years,” he says.

3 popular books by Ruskin Bond you shouldn't miss

  • The Room on the Roof: The novel takes you on a journey of the countryside seen through the eyes of a 16-year-old boy called Rusty.
  • The Blue Umbrella: The novel revolves around a little girl named Biniya. She trades her leopard claw pendant to acquire a blue umbrella. The umbrella becomes the focal point of her life – but she hands it over to a needy old man.
  • A Flight of Pigeons: The book is based on the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Bond was born in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, and grew up in Jamnagar, Dehradun, New Delhi and Shimla.
He has also written over 500 short stories and articles that have appeared in magazines and anthologies.

At the age of eight, Bond escaped his jail-like boarding school in the hills and went to live with his father in Delhi.
