How To Go Stargazing In Delhi For Free

If you love watching the sky, but the only stars you really get to see are those on Van Gogh’s painting, you’re probably living in Delhi.
The rising levels of pollution in the Capital are making a sky full of stars seem like a distant dream. With these astronomical observatories in the city, however, you can correct this fault in your stars, without having to travel to the hills.

Nehru Planetarium
Built as a tribute to India’s first Prime Minister – Jawaharlal Nehru, the space came into existence to promote his ideas on the importance of methods of science and astronomy education for children. Equipped with inbuilt telescopes, multiple shows every day and monthly workshops, the planetarium is the ideal place for those who don’t own a telescope, yet want to enjoy a clear view of the night sky. They keep organising various astronomical events at Jantar Mantar Observatory and Pir Ghaib Observatory.
Entry: Free
Address: Nehru Planetarium, Teen Murti Marg
Eligibility: Open to all.

For serious stargazers, you can join these clubs
If you wish to take your interest in astronomy to the next level, there are two clubs in the city that you can join. The first is the Amateur Astronomers Association Delhi (AAAD), in collaboration with Nehru Planetarium; and the second one is Astronomica, amateur astronomers' wing of SPACE. (Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators).

AAAD
Functioning for over 33 years now, AAAD has recently converted into an NGO that offers an extensive research and study of astronomy. Once a member, you can have discussions with other members of the club, watch celestial events, learn how to construct your own telescope, besides partaking in their various activities and workshops. The group meets at the Nehru Planetarium every Sunday.
Fee: Rs 600 (annually)
Address: Nehru Planetarium, Teen Murti Marg
Eligibility: Open to all

Astronomica
This is a group of people who are passionate about astronomy, both amateurs and professionals. The membership includes a basic study of stars, sky watching, recognising constellations, astrophotography, telescope making, and an astronomy kit. Besides this, you can take part in various national and international events they are affiliated to.
Fee: Rs 1,700 (annually)
Address: Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE), Janak Puri
Eligibility: Open to all

Masoom Grover BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

It''s high time we do something fruitful so that we don''t have to visit such Planetariums to have a view of the sky full of stars or else there will be a time in the near future when the stars would be a rare commodity only presented by such museums.
