Your Etiquette Queries Answered Here

Q. A friend invited me for lunch with his family. They were hospitable but my friend’s father is a bit too strict and serious because of which I felt conscious and a bit edgy. My friend intends to invite me again for a small family dinner and I don’t want to attend it. How do I say no to him in a manner that is polite and not offensive? – A Troubled Guest

A. Dear Troubled Guest, these situations are common in life and learning how to deal with them is a lesson in etiquette as well as a life skill. Follow these tips to know what to do.

1. Politely decline the offer: Politeness is important but it does not mean forcing yourself in situations where you don’t feel comfortable. If you didn’t enjoy your friend’s parents’ company, you are not obliged to have dinner with them again. Tell your friend that you are busy and wouldn’t be able to make it to dinner.

2. Accept big party invites: You must not skip important events of your friend’s life like his birthday party and the like, where his authoritative father will have a bunch of kids to focus on and not just you. While it’s okay to say no to an intimate sit-down family dinner or party, declining invitation to his birthday bash or a New Year celebration will be rude. Large gatherings are anyway safe zones to mingle with people even if you don’t like one member of the family. Now, calm down and feel happy about your decision.
