Make Your Skin Glow!

As summer transitions into winter, you ought to take good care of your skin while getting exposed to the sun and its rays. Give your skin more fluids and eat right for healthy skin, says an expert.

October being the beginning of the festive season, is generally the time when most people plan their vacation. The days tend to be very hot and humid in October. So, Chandrika Mahendra, Principal Scientist, Personal Care, The Himalaya Drug Company, suggests how to keep skin glowing all day long.

1. One of the basic mantras for beating the October heat is to get more fluids into your body. Your skin glows and appears healthier when your body is adequately hydrated. If you are heading to one of the beaches in southern India, treat yourself generously with tender coconut water. It is not only low in calories but has anti-oxidants, Vitamin C and other essential minerals that enrich your skin.

2. Excessive oily food may cause acne, and the heat only makes it worse. Look for fruits that are rich in Vitamin C such as orange, lemon and kiwi. They help to maintain moisture balance in your skin and Vitamin C also helps build protection against skin wrinkling.

3. Peel-off that tan: After a day-out in the sun, try out a natural anti-tan peel off mask. An orange-based peel off mask is a good pick. Oranges are rich in Vitamin C and the antioxidants present in the orange peel will work collectively to provide an even-textured skin and act as a natural cleanser. Ingredients such as honey can also act as an anti-bacterial element with healing properties.

Remove your tan with these easy home remedies

Turmeric and gram flour: Mix two spoons of gram flour (besan) with a pinch of turmeric and add a few drops of rose water or milk (for dry skin) to make a thick paste. On a clean face, slather the paste and leave it on for about 20 minutes until it dries out. To wash off, moisten your face and gently scrub off the mask using a circular motion. Try it on alternate days for two weeks. Works best all skin types.

Yoghurt and tomato: Tomato is a natural skin lightener and works on pigmentation and dark spots. Tomato can be applied directly on the face but due to its citric nature, it can itch and burn. Mixing it with yoghurt soothes skin and together they can reduce excess oil. Mix the two and apply on face for 30 minutes before rinsing. You may feel a tingling sensation, so use moisturiser to calm your skin.
Works best on oily skin.

Honey and papaya: Papaya has enzymes that have bleaching properties and honey helps in treating sunburnt and damaged skin. When mixed together they help in removing tan and blemishes. Mash half a cup of papaya and mix a tablespoon of honey. Blend it well and apply on face for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Works best on dry skin.

Buttermilk and oatmeal: Mix three tablespoons of buttermilk with two tablespoon of oatmeal and massage the pack in a circular motion on the affected area. Buttermilk soothes the skin and oatmeal is a wonderful exfoliator. Works best on combination skin.

Lemon juice and potato: Extract juice of a medium-sized potato and mix it with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Apply the mixture on your face it leave it for 30 minutes. Wash with cold water and pat dry. Works on all skin type.

Dark lips? Try this at home.

Regular weekly scrub: Use natural lip scrubber once every week to remove dead celss from your skin and bring back the suppleness. An easy way to do is mixing up few drops of olive oil and 1 tsp sugar and use this for exfoliating your lips. Once you rinse off, apply healing lip butter or your favorite lip moisturizer.

Lemon: Lemon is used to treat dark skin patches and spots as its bleaching properties will allow your skin to naturally lighten dark lips. Squeeze a lemon and apply the juice on your lips before going to bed. Follow this simple remedy daily for few months. If not this then you can also take a thin slice of lemon, sprinkle a bit of sugar on top and rub it on your lips. It will exfoliate dead cells and make way for new fresh skin.

Don't ignore your hair

Curry leaves and coconut oil: Massage your scalp with a concoction of coconut oil and curry leaves, which is a fool-proof way to maintain dark tresses. Take a handful of curry leaves and boil it in 1 cup of coconut oil for six to eight minutes. Allow it to cool and massage your scalp with this mixture regularly.

Ribbed gourd and olive oil: Ribbed gourd is widely used to treat pre-mature hair and restore the pigments. Dice the gourd in small pieces and dry them out before soaking them in olive oil for three to four days. Next, boil the mixture till it turns a dark black in colour. Use this to massage your scalp at least twice a week.
