Home Remedies To Treat Seasonal Infections

Veena Rawat is a vocalist and when she started falling ill very frequently with seasonal infections, she got worried. These frequent bouts of infections were not just making her weak but were also impacting her career as she had to let go of several opportunities since she could not sing due to the cold induced hoarseness that lasted for months. Trips to hospitals failed to find a solution to these infections that attacked her with the change of season, sometimes lasting for weeks.

Finally, she discovered a magic potion that helped her stay put during the high tide of these cyclic contagions. And this potion came from her own kitchen! And it was nothing but the regular tulsi tea with some herbs which she began taking regularly which eventually improved her immunity. Not just Veena, there are many of us who fall ill due to viral infections as the season changes and in fact there are some, more than others who fall prey to these. It happens because some of us have lower immunity than others which makes us more susceptible to illnesses.

Seasonal Vegetables
The solution to most of our ailments lies in the season itself. According to celebrity nutritionist Kavita Devgan, “There’s a reason why we get an array of saags (greens) in the winter season; they are naturally warming and are loaded with nutrition that helps the body fight against seasonal infections. Make your plate colourful. The more colourful the veggies, the more the phytonutrients, so better protection against cold and fever that torment you in winters.” Having at least 3-4 servings of greens during the week is a must.

Ginger and Honey
Why do we crave for adrak wali chai so much in winters? Maybe it is our body’s need to ask for it! Ginger has a warming impact on the body and is loaded with anti-inflammatory gingerols and shaogals that help relive a sore throat and drain the congestion and are also said to kill rhinoviruses which cause cold and flu. Honey has ant-inflammatory properties and soothes sore throat and eases cough. Consuming a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice and honey daily during the winters can help prevent seasonal infections.

Tulsi and Black Pepper
Tulsi not just improves immunity but is also proven to cure cold and cough, help relieve symptoms of asthma and arthritis and has been a part of several ayurvedic combinations in treating a number of other ailments like diarrhea, fever, dysentery, arthritis, dyspepsia , vomiting, acidity, cardiac disorders, back pain, skin diseases etc. Black pepper is loaded with antibacterial and antibiotic properties as it is a rich source of immunity-boosting Vitamin C. Boil one cup of water, add a pinch of crushed black pepper and some tulsi leaves. Sip the tea through the day. Alternately, you can also have 5 leaves of tulsi, 2 peppercorns and half a teaspoon of honey on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Continue it throughout the winters for best results.

Amla or Gooseberry
It is a divine elixir in Ayurveda. One of the richest sources of Vitamin C on earth, Amla, which you get in abundance in winters is a sure shot way to increase your immunity. All you have to do is to include it in your diet daily. Bonus? Clearer skin, better digestion and lustrous mane!

Garlic
Garlic has allicin which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. According to several studies, people who regularly take garlic supplements are less likely to suffer from cold and flu than those who do not. Raw garlic works best and hence you must have one to two garlic cloves on an empty stomach for best results. Allicin in garlic is also said to bring down cholesterol levels in the body.

Turmeric water
Sip a glass of warm water with turmeric everyday in the morning. Make it your first drink. It is not just good for your liver and is said to flush out toxins from the body, but it is also believed to accelerate mucus production, which naturally flushes out microbes from the respiratory tract. Turmeric has antiviral and antibacterial properties that help fight any kind of infection in the body and its anti-inflammatory property helps in relieving the symptoms of cough and cold.
