2016 was pretty much a turbulent year. And to escape this reality, we resorted to fantasy-fiction to look beautiful. Make-up trends that went viral shunned the natural and the practical, channelling a world of enchanting mythical creatures, fairy dusts and even, the solar system. Fancy a trip down the rabbit hole one last time?

Mermaid hair
The year started off with this fanta'sea'-creature that inspired women to dye their hair in bright, vibrant hues. The trend caught on like fire, given that the colours could light up even the grayest of days.
Hidden rainbow hair
Even if you were living under the rock this past year, you couldn't have missed this one. Taking off from the mermaid hair, this one came with a little element of surprise. A portion of hair, hidden under a more natural colour, was dyed in rainbow hues. This made it easier for women to choose when to go all out, and when to keep it subtle. It looks exactly like it sounds — like a sudden burst of colours in the sky, after a day or two of gloomy drizzle.
Underbrow glitter, teardrop glitter
All that glittered, was a woman's face in 2016. There was not an inch left that did not have glitter splattered on it sometime or the other in the past year. Nail? Check. Lips? Check. Ears? Yes, check! But the most viral and definitely, the dreamiest were the underbrow glitter and the tear drop glitter. The futuristic underbrow only added to the eye make-up revolution. And the teardrop glitter? Well, who would have thought that looking sad could look so enchanting!
Galaxy freckles
This was one of the most fantastical make-up trends of 2016. It started with faux freckles, took a step up to rainbow freckles and then went out- of-the-world with galaxy freckles. While some kept it simple with small spots made in shimmery teals and mauves, the more adventurous ones went all out with constellation patterns and stars on a mystical galaxy themed background. High on sparkles!
Coloured lashes
By 2016, there wasn't an inch left on a woman's body that had not been coloured. After the mermaid hair and rainbow brows, came the coloured lashes. The easiest way to play with a little bit of colour, without going all guns blazing, are the non-black mascaras that the runways fell in love with. Blues were the go-to colour, though greens and purples also made iridescent appearances.
Unicorn liner
This trend made its appearance around the end of the year, and definitely added a little more sheen to 2016's colour palette. Inspired by the mythical one-horned creature, it involves crafting a unicorn's horn with the eyeliner. Soft pastels, neons and bright tinges being the keywords, it is complimented with copious amount of fairy dust! Bonus: Unicorn make-up brushes were also a thing this year. It's just so much wow, making the wait through past year's crazy antics worth it.
