What It Takes To Survive In Space

In his memoir ‘Endurance,’ astronaut Scott Kelly gives an eye opening account of what it takes to survive out there

Kelly holds the the unique record of surviving 520 days in space. But you probably won’t find the author praising himself much in his memoir. The astronaut focuses instead of telling a believable account of all the life events (good and bad)  that got him where he was.

Speaking during an interview he said, “So many other NASA astronauts’ memoirs ‘focus on the good stuff and not necessarily the personal things that happened in their lives, things they might not be proud of, things that we all have that makes us normal, relatable people.”

Here are some of unbelievable things that happened and recounted in his autobiography ‘Endurance: A Year in Space, A Lifetime of Discovery. ’

Why he became a spaceman: The 53-year-old didn’t discover his passion for aviation and space until reading Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book ‘The Right Stuff’ while still at college.

Almost banned: Kelly tells how prostate cancer surgery almost got him banned from space station duty, and how his vision problem during an earlier spaceflight almost cost him the one-year mission, which spanned from March 2015 to March 2016.

Dumpster diving in space: Kelly went dumpster diving on the International Space Station for discarded meals after a supply capsule was destroyed.

Getting tattooed: Kelly has black (tattoo) dots all over his body to make it easier to take ultrasound tests while in orbit aboard the space station.

Hating that space stink : Initially Kelly didn’t want space station assignments for fear it would limit his shuttle-flying opportunities.
