Zinneerah Khan: Are We Independent Yet?

We Indians proudly celebrated our nation's 70th Independence Day with frolic and festivity. This day marks our glorious nation’s freedom from British rule.

Now, 70 years later, if we take a look at the current state of our country, we must ask ourselves a question which would define the way we look at freedom and independence. ‘Is India independent in the true sense?’ The obvious answers will be: ‘Well, of course, it is! We govern ourselves, by choosing our own leaders; we have law and order in top condition; we have constitutional rights, duties, etc. What else defines independence?’
However, if we introspect, we will see that India is not yet independent. We may have our own government, be in a position to exercise our basic Fundamental Rights, get enough opportunities to sustain our families, but that does not define independence. Independence for us should mean freedom, not only from external political forces, but the evils still prevalent in society. True independence shall be attained only when we win over the  vices and malpractices virulent among our masses. When our hearts and souls are purified and the fire in our minds is ignited  with feelings of justice, loyalty and patriotism towards our dear motherland, we can proudly and with great satisfaction proclaim that we have succeeded in making our nation independent to the core.
All this is possible only if we stand together and try together, proving that unity in diversity is our greatest strength. We can and we will. After all, we just have to introspect, and question, ‘Is India independent in the true sense? Are we really independent yet?’

We aren''t! Not completely! Still we are dependent. Yes, we''ve to get rid of such crimes. I feel in the other way we are dependent on other countries. In the past years they came here and controlled us, but now we are being controlled by other countries indirectly. This is because of the evil practices among us. Very true article!

Tanishq Ahuja ST. MARGARET SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

No, we are not independent yet because of the evil practices in our society like the untouchability , child marriage, satipratha...the list is endless. If we start to end these practices we can say that we are fully independent. Moreover, we should stop buying goods from other countries and start making our own goods.
