Vidhi Khamele: Are Western Concepts Taking Over Indian Culture?

India is the cradle of human civilization, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend and melting pot of tradition. Western concepts are certainly not taking over our culture. We are just evolving and advancing according to the needs of the time. Culture isn't static. It keeps changing and modifying according to the needs of society. Many people say Western culture has a negative impact on our culture. But what is the need to adopt it? Instead take the best qualities out of it like hard work and honesty. Ancient Indian culture had many social evils. The caste system was predominant and people were discriminated against ruthlessly. Today while we travel, work, study at school, college we don’t bother about caste or creed. Women were considered as housekeepers and not allowed to study or venture out late at night. But now they are equal to men in every sphere of life. Earlier, only traditional clothes like sarees and dhotis were part of the daily attire. Now there are so many types of clothes to choose from. We are still learning a lot from the West like cleanliness, traffic rules, transportation, self-dependence, etc. It isn't a sin to accept Western culture in terms of technology and abandoning social evils that were destroying human values. The onus is on us to accept good or bad things from any culture and imbibe them in our lives.

yeah.... i really feel it.... really indian culture is being taken over by western culture.... nowadays people tend to prefer western culture rather than our own indian...... our indian culture holds a very special space in the hearts of people around the world...... we should be aware of the change in technologies and cultures...but we have to stand by our own culture.....

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Well, first of all, the caste system, sati, etc aren''t a part of Indian culture, it is a part of the long list of meaningless rituals fllowed in India. And it is extremely good it is no longer practiced. It is true, we are learning a lot of things formthe West but there are many good things in the Indian culture which we must learn retain. But we should limit this acceptance and not make it so much that we think we are inferior to them, which is the condition in India currently.

Sagar Mittal Somerville School Greater Noida

No..i dont think they are India is a dynamic country where people accept new things without neglecting thier own culture

Rajathariga S P AECS MAGNOLIA MARUTHI PUB SCH

Very true. We should borrow the good qualities from every culture and introduce it into our own.

Abhi Dabas Bal Bharati Public School Pitampura

Western culture is slowly and slowly taking over our indian culture. It dominates us in every sphere of our life in a variety of ways - clothes, choice study at school, travel and traffic rules. Sanskrit, the mother of all languages is just known to just 10% of indians and english is coming up as a leading language. So it is important for us to maintain our heritage and culture and just add up the good qualities of western or any other foriegn culture.

Tanishka Radcliffe School,Balnagar

it is not that if we are taking over some traditions we are not following our own traditions.it is also not only us even foreigners learn and do our traditions.

Aaditya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

Every different nation has a different culture. Every culture has a good and bad side. India is taking the good sides of the Western culture. It is necessary. With the intake of western culture Indians do not mean to forget Indian culture. They just mean to improve it.

ALINAWAZ KHAN DL DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL(SHALIMAR BAGH)

Well versed! Indeed, Charles Darwin had already introduced phylogeny of organisms. So, Human has evolved from lower animals including chameleonand hence, takes hue and color of its surroundings. Forgetting Indian culture is missing its sovereignty. Instead, western culture must learn from civilized Indian culture. One can''t forget R N Tagore and his Shanti Niketan which is still renowned for its culture, worldwide. Indian culture has beauty of its own which needs no western cosmetics!

V.Ananya D.A.V. Public School

Most Indians today prefer western practices over traditional Indian cultural practices because they are just more easier .For example , we''ve stopped sitting on the floor cross-legged while eating and prefer to use dinning tables . This sitting down posture is called Padmaasana which helps in digestion , and is a good exercise .Similarly , eating with spoon instead of hands- which improves our motor nerves performance - is also making us lazy .

Kashish Goel Bal Bharati Public School

I don''t think so western concepts we taking over Indian culture.

Asmita D.A.V Public School, Thane

We should follow only some of the good part of Western culture and at the same time, we should not forget our own.

Sumedh Chavan ST. PATRICKS HIGH SCHOOL

In the past, Indian culture was also adopted by the world an example is yoga. But, really I must say that western concepts are taking over in culture. I don''t thinks that India will forget her culture in spite of adopting western concepts.

Yashita Nagpal BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Today, we are blindly following western culture and significance of our tradition is being dissolved into this phase of westernization.

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Yes the fact is that even Indians follow western culture.

Sneha Shaji CRPF Public School, Jawahar Nagar, Hakimpet

Yes, western culture are taking over our Indian culture. As the generation goes on we see the present generation more indulged in western culture than our own culture. The present youngsters forgets the value and tradition maintained by our ancestor for years. The youth nowadays forget to spend some time in our traditions because they are engaged searching and exploring the western culture.

satya naagarjuna high shool

maybe.....but even though our culture being taken over by western in india ,our culture is slowly spreading to other countries.recently thailand is seen to be interested in sanskrit to seek vedas, our hindi language has it''s identity in other countries, yoga is pursued internationally by all countries, and so......i think when everyone realises ,they will definately start reviving our culture.

satya naagarjuna high shool

the good part of our culture can revived when we recognise it

MISHI JAIN HAPPY SCHOOL(DARYAGANJ)

It is true that western culture is coming to our country, but India''s culture level is not going down by this.

even tajikistan had it''s craze over our culture.they even love our architecture, sarees, music, cinema and many more. we can just revive it!

PRERNA JOSHI MAYUR PUBLIC SCHOOL(PATPATGANJ)

Indian culture in itself is full of great treasures and many more hidden secrets yet to be discovered. No doubt that it is in itself a unique culture but I don''t think that as long as the western culture does not harm our morals and ethical values it can be adopted for good. What is to be taken care of is the well being of each and every one..

Renisha Christy.R Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Rightly said. Every thing has both a good as well as a bad part. It lies in our hands to pick up the good ones.

Nitin Vignesh Delhi Public School -Uniworld City Chennai

yes,bit slowly it is happening ,but why we are allowing it we should save our culture, its our responsible

MAYANK GUPTA K.D.B. PUBLIC SCHOOL

yeah i feel same.PEOPLE of India follow their customs blindly. They do not follow their good customs (like going to church once in a week)but follow others (like relationship between a boy and a girl more than a friend). We should follow and respect our CULTURE.

Ritvik Baweja BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Yup, our Indian culture and heritage is decaying and we should do something to preserve it.

Mythili Iyer Greenwood High

iiajiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiioerui

Simar Sangla MODERN SCHOOL(VASANT VIHAR)

Yes.In India the culture of suits,sarees,kurta-pygama can vanish anytime.Western cullture does not have the right to vanish our Indian dressing. So the answer to your question is a big YES.

Shahnaz Warsi Unity College

It is not at all wrong to adopt good qualities from other cultures. But the problem is that we don''t adopt good things as easily as we adopt bad qualities. For example, any new invention in West takes years to come in India but any new fashion of short clothes and late parties etc etc takes very short period to come over here. So I think some or the other way western concepts are taking over Indian cultures.

purnima Pon Vidyashram - Valasaravakkam

yes ..it is definitely true. i really do feel it when i am in outdoors.they even prefer western culture in traditional occasions .

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

India has the most ancient and unique culture. It should not be changed just because there western concept..

EKNOOR BHATTI Bal Bharati Public School

yes.

SNEHA - R Kulapati munshi bhavan's vidhya mandir

The Indian culture is slowly getting wiped out because of the influence of the western concepts.Western concepts have brought in good values like cleanliness. It helps to us wipe out social values like sati.

RIYA MITTAL Convent of Jesus and Mary

Nowadays,Indians prefer copying what Western countries do.They themselves don''t respect their country ,then how can they expect others to appreciate India.

Afsha Saiyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

You''re right!

Swaleha Ansari Padua High School , Mankhurd

I think, yes . Our people didn''t know actually what is a trend of India so in that way they are following western culture.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

I fully agree with the original post. Inculcating better values and systems and replacing the traditional ones shouldn''t be attributed to being overtaken or overpowered or manipulated by another.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

My comment is in reference to the subject in question about Indian VS Western culture. Let''s first talk about cleanliness and hygiene.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

How clean, hygienic and pollution-free are we in comparison to European nations? Shouldn''t we embrace their more eco-friendly methods?

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

With reference to cleanliness, we must also commend our Prime Minister for travelling the world and giving us the best of the worlds in the form of his various campaigns and initiatives.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

In this case, I am referring to the Svachchha Bharat Abhiyan, for making India a green nation.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

Also, adopting various cultures has been a practice performed by India since ancient times.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

India has borrowed values from the Arabic about food, British about architecture, and the list goes on endlessly.

Bhavya Shah Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

Thus, learning from others is a boon and implies welcoming of diversity.

Kashish Goel Bal Bharati Public School

It depends on us how we adopt western culture:- at the cost of our own heritage or remembering our own heritage. Thus, according to me, western isnot taking over Indian culture

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

Yes, Indians are allowing the Western culture to overtake the rich Indian culture. This is because we feel that the western cultures are more exotic than ours because we can see only the advantages of their culture, not the disadvantages. Whereas the western people find our culture exotic because they are just not used to it.

ANWESHA DAS Delhi public school Kalyanpur

For overall development,we need to adopt. We cannot sit back due to the sentiments we hold towards indian culture. We have to change ourselves according to the world. Also, I think there is no such thing as destruction of culture. Culture grows. It changes its dimensions and form from time to time.

Samueal Raj Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yes I agree with that .

Annada Dash KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA -PANVEL

yes,it is happening,we should save our culture

Hemalatha.G Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary Scho

Yeah, you are right. We are learning from them. There is nothing wrong in opting it. But thus alone should not be their practice.

Emima Thangapandi PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Yes you are correct. Many people keep blaming the western concepts but it shows that western civilization has brought development in us.
