Shourya Shrivastava: Is Rote Learning The Only Way To Score Good Marks?

The mental ability to memorize is often used as an indicator of intelligence. No doubt, the two are strongly linked, but memory is not always a reliable indicator of intelligence. Working memory does not directly affect the level of intelligence of a student. So, is rote learning an essential part if a students wants to score good marks in any exam?

Of course not! There are many more ways of studying and scoring which are actually very good. Read the text book thoroughly at least three times. For the first time read the text book fast. The second time keep a pencil and a paper handy. This time read slower and aloud, make notes, circle the keywords and underline the words you don''t understand and look up the meaning in the dictionary. Then read your notes in the same manner and try understanding and framing the answer in your own words.

continued...... Make abbreviations which make sense only to you. When you will understand the chapters, you will never need to do rote learning and even you will score well. So guys practice this new way of learning. I am currently in class 9 and I practice this method of learning religiously and stand first in the class with above 95% marks.

I remember an article of Bhavana "Marksheets are just a piece of paper". You are right. Marksheets cannot determine our standard. Bit nowadays, we are forced to memorize concepts instead of understanding and connecting them. This has to stop! Nice article Shourya!

The method of rote learning has become a studying standard of every school.Students are not learning how to gain knowledge but instead they are doing it all for marks.the student to score good marks becomes a scholar.but this does not make any sense!they should be able to understand the concept in detail and should be able to think how to apply in our daily life.this is what learning actually is.marks can be scored by reading TEXTBOOKS,articles related to it.An awesome question Shourya

No, schools should test the mental aptitude of students, not the memory. The students who cannot remember at one time are considered to be a failure and the teacher do not expect anything from the. Like the famous thought by Thomas Alva Edison says-'' A single sheet of paper cannot decide my future''.Surely! a very nice question.

Haha. It''s indeed a funny question by shourya.. Rote learning is a perfect way to score marks but only on some kinda sheets.. We cannot judge a fish and a monkey by their ability to climb a tree .rote learning is followed by many students especially in India as in our country as marks says it all. But now many competitive exams have been bought into application.. Soo now students have to automatically change their way of learning or else Thier life will be in the dark..

Shamika Nayak St.Xavier's icse

As a student i disagree that rote learning can fetch you marks.I could rather say that being an ICSE student memorizing does not help much.A student must know to practically use his knowledge instead of just memorizing it.Now if i am studying first aid in school I should not just memorize the usage of all the aids but if time comes i should be able to practically use my knowledge and that is more important. After all the board also asks application based stuff and rote learning does not help.
