Sanandi: Why Do Men Decide The Role Of Women?

Fearful of losing its authority, the patriarchy continues to define a woman's role, trying to limit her boundaries. These chains persist not just in occupational roles and duties but also in the separate definitions of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ for women.

Whether we like it or not, we still belong to a society where the woman is always blamed for anything going wrong in a family. The 'poor innocent' man holds no responsibility for the moral upbringing of his children. A boy might be a drunkard or a gambler, but he always deserves the most beautiful, wealthy and educated girl. The question, 'Does she deserve him?' is not even considered.

Even Bollywood films portray women as weak and feeble. She is the ‘unarmed and weak’ who needs a man to save her.

Children learn what they see. When a child sees the family silently approving the acts which suppress and look down upon one gender, he too mirrors his elders, thus narrowing the scope for change.

We need to break through this and open our minds to the vast ocean of knowledge. Even today women are the first in the family to be asked to sacrifice and often the last to be acknowledged, respected and valued. We need to end body shaming and the norms for how we  should look or behave. Women need to understand that no one will fight their battles or change for them. The power lies in her to change attitudes. Be the one in charge, instead of being a ‘damsel in distress’.

While the awakening about women empowerment is rapidly being spread on different platforms in India, in the other hand we still give less value and priority to women in our houses. If they raise their voice for themselves they are being judged and even called creepy feminists sometimes. We need to understand that the women inside our houses also need women empowerment.

Orthodox thinking is more prevalent in rural areas and women there are still considered weak and helpless. Women must learn how to deal with people who try to judge them or limit them. It''s in women''s hand to decide the standard of her life. Many women have broken these barriers set up by the society and have created their own identity. They should not give the key to their happiness to anybody and live the life they dream of.

A girl is really chirpy in her early years(2-5), but as she grows older and older,( 13-15) she is taught about all the do''s and do not''s, as a result, after a certain period of time the same girl begins to doubt herself. If she takes a step ahead she is pulled 2 steps back by the boundations.
