Nidhi: Do You Enjoy Travelling By Bus?

I smelt human sweat and oranges. The people around me sat in a comfortable silence as we listened to the ancient filmi music blaring from the speakers overhead. As the public bus meandered through the pothole sprinkled roads of Kerala, I relaxed and looked out of the window. For me, a ride in the KSRTC public bus is the very zenith of independence.

I find public bus rides exhilarating because of the intense struggle they portray. From the moment you step onto the bus stand, your survival solely depends on your wits and the paltry five rupees you clutch in your palm. Kudos to those fighters out there who can push their way into a bus and attain eternal glory (eternal glory being an advantageous seat next to the front entrance). The triumphant moment when you feel the wind in your hair and can see the landscape outside your window whizz past your eyes is worth experiencing.

So, when I moved to Bangalore, I was amazed by the contempt many of my friends felt for the public transportation system. Many children in this city have grown up without ever having travelled by a public bus. To those unlucky souls out there, a public bus enthusiast like me would simply say,  “You don't know what you are missing!”.

I absolutely love buses. I have grown up in Mumbai where my grandma used to take me in many buses. When I too came to Bangalore, I saw very few children using buses. I like the chatter in the buses in which you learn something new. Often, your neighbour, becomes an acquaintance. I also like travelling in trains and the experience is similar to the bus. To me, the convenience of cars and planes, can never overpower the friendships made in buses and trains.
