Meghna: Would Campaigns Change If The Voting Age Was 13?

It is impossible to believe but acceptable to imagine! The most important difference we will notice is the target of audience. We are all aware that the speeches made for campaigns are promises and ideas put forward to target the larger age group. There is an age bar set because it is not possible to influence the thinking of people aged above eighteen years old.

The funniest and potential reality in this scenario will be that, the guarantee provided by the candidates will turn out to be true, once they come to power. This is because, the needs and requirements of the younger age group are easy to satisfy. It is indeed true that as kids, we all wished for the huge teddy bear our best friend had or a box of chocolates! As kids, our only wants were to eat ice cream every day, to go to parks and zoos, to meet our best friend and to have the time of our life (probably to do away with exams and not worry about completing home work too!).

Today, unfortunately, the problems which are to be removed cannot be solved by merely putting them forward. To eradicate the demands of the common man is not an easy task. Poverty, sanitation, unemployment, education are the issues a country wishes to look into. These needs are not satisfied with a hundred rupee note. These needs can be satisfied only with a few, too many, quite a lot of hundred rupee notes. People aged above eighteen would press on the importance of issues that affect the entire nation. They would demand and expect to satisfy the problems of the nation as a whole.

If campaigns targeted a group of audience aged thirteen, there is no doubt that it would be easy to meddle with their thinking. After all, as kids, our joy knew no bounds when our parents bought us a small toy for our birthday or took us to the park to play! Today, at every campaign, it is common to hear, “This locality will get uninterrupted power and water supply if I am elected.” Well, it is quite easy to imagine if people targeted the younger generation, their campaigns would sound something like, “Every child in this society will get a teddy bear, a candy and a video game if I am elected.” Now we know why the voting age is not thirteen!

On 17th of this month, India is all set to welcome the 14th President. We have NDA’s Ram Nath Kovind and UPA’s Meira Kumar battling to take charge as the President of India. It’s not going to be easy to lead an entire nation. So, here’s looking to the transformation India shall go through after July 17th.

Yes, I agree that if the voting age will change to 13 then things will become way too easy for politicians and political parties. They will not struggle to convince people to vote them the way they have to do.

No, I don''t think children at the age of thirteen properly understand politics and don''t have the maturity to be able to understand whom to vote.

Hemalatha.G Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary Scho

"13" is early. But 15 and above would make it easy. Because nowadays we people discuss a lot in it. Students have more nationalistic feelings than adults. So they''ll choose their leaders properly.

Ananya Singh Harmony International School , Kharghar

Yes, because at the age of 13 children will get easily swayed by the false promises made by the politicians and will not be able elect the right candidate.

ABHIGYAN SINGH Harmony International School , Kharghar

No,18 should be the voting age.

Koushtubh Roy Lakshmipat Singhania Academy

No, i don''t think kids of 13 years old have the maturity and understanding of politics . if 13 years old vote for the political parties , then the country would be in a very bad shape.

Students belonging to age 13 have maturity to vote according to me . we all speak politics in class at least once in a month , won''t we ????? This proves that we have the maturity . Anyway I think children belonging to age13 can vote .

children especially at the age of thirteen will fall into the politician traps because of their false promises . So its better from age 15 onwards so that they will have the thinking capacity to vote properly . If people from age 13 start voting , the politicians need not struggle convincing but would make some fake promises so that they are swayed away by their promises.

yes i agree with her as voting initiatives for children 13 and above will work as children are more nationalistic and have the understanding levels a lot more than adults so i think they will choose better leaders

Yes I agree.. But as I am small only 11 years so no voting allowed..

Samanth Sai.R.S THE NEW CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

I think 13 is too early for children for understanding politics. Some even don''t know who is their CM is. Hence the work for the politicians will be more easy.So 15 should be the age bar.

Rida Yumn Ahmed J.K.G. International School

Youngsters as young as 15 today can speak their minds and understand the issues ..If we are given a chance to be eligible for voting, the whole scenario will change and it may lead to progress..
