Is Humanities A Stream For Backbenchers?

Next year, I will be opting for Humanities, and I am quite cool with that. But whenever I answer the frequently asked question — “which stream are you going to opt for?”, I am often responded with confused faces accompanied with a frown. I don’t understand why is humanities considered a stream for the ‘backbenchers?’ Why can't it share a position equal to the science stream?  That’s a question every parent, teacher and student needs to answer!

I really think you should ignore those comments. Even I have faced such comments, and believe me, you must work on proving them wrong on the view that humanities is something for ''backbenchers''.

No, humanities is a not a stream for backbenchers. Every stream has its strength and limitations and students should choose streams according to their interests and career objectives, rather than only studying science because it is the "done thing".If humanities genuinely interests someone they should be not discouraged by the stigma that is usually attached to this stream and opt for the stream.

For sure its perfectly fine to go with whatever you like whether its science or humanities stream. You need not be worried about all those frowned faces. But still a question arises that if humanities isnt a subject for backbenchers and i know that it is not easy at all, then why do they give this stream to students who get lesser marks? Dont you think this is the only reason behind this notion?

Every stream is best in itself and if we say that humanities is a stream for "back benchers" it is totally wrong because humanities students toil much more harder than the science students as they have to cram a lot of matter and retain it for a very long period of time while on the other hand science students have to just understand the concept and do its application part. So,in my opinion the humanities students are much more hard working than the science students.

Does Harper Lee''s "Go set a watchman" go at par with "To kill a mockingbird''''?

nope ......but guys Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has said .......''The most intelligent ones are found in the backbenchers"''

Give me a break all those who think HUMANITIES is the stream for "BACKBENCHERS". This type of comments are to be avoided. I think everyone should try to be perfect in their field and then none can stop one reaching his/her goal..

NO I DON''T THINK SO... NEXT YEAR I WILL PASS MY 10TH AND I AM GOING TO OPT FOR HUMANITIES AND MY PARENTS DO SUPPORT ME FOR MY DECISION THEY SAID ALL THEY WANT IS ''''GOOD MARKS'''' SO THAT I CAN GET ADMISSION IN A GOOD COLLEGE WHICH WILL HELP ME IN FUTURE. I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD LISTEN TO THEIR HEART AND NOT TO OTHER''S, IF YOU THINK YOU CAN DO THIS.... BELIEVE ME NOBODY CAN STOP YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR GOAL. AND TRUST ME HUMANITIES HAS NO RELATION WITH ''''BACKBENCHERS.."

Be a backbencher and top the class. For sure, i you''re interested in Humanities and you like the subjects, you''ll do extremely well. And who said backbenchers are bad students? The most creative minds often occupy that one little corner in the back. Hell, I''M a backbencher and I topped UT-1 at least.

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

According to me, humanities is as important as science or commerce. Opting humanities is also a good choice as is has its own plus points. People who are interested in taking it up should do it.
