Himanshi Dhawan: What's Your Take On Marks Moderation?

CBSE result, this year, is entangled with the mark moderation policy and the ongoing debates associated with it. Initially it seemed the Board has taken a milestone decision of removing the decade long practice of giving 'grace marks' to students. While the intention was to bring in 'clean marks', however it was not accepted well. Anguish and requests poured in once the HRD Ministry decided not to give grace marks implementing from this year! 'Rules cannot change after the game has begun,' with this obvious statement given by Delhi High Court, CBSE's no moderation policy is facing a situation of 'to be or not to be!' The Board hasn't given a tentative date for the result. However, the only statement being from the HRD Minister just now that it will be announced on time. But I personally believe in the famous saying that “Great things take time and so, decisions should be made at the right place and at the right time.” CBSE has received the wake-up call quite late which has caused chaos in the country. Students and their parents are quite anxious, as in they are on pins and needles, waiting for the board exam results.

Though the move is right and good for us as it will show us the mirror, but thinking of it at the time when the results should be out is wrong. If this would have happened even during the exams or just before them it would have been better and appreciated.

Why should the Board give grace marks in the first place? Equality must be maintained amongst all students. I am in favour of clean marks. I agree with the saying Himanshi has mentioned above. It''s good that the Board has got rid of this policy. Over 27 lakh students are eagerly waiting for CBSE class 10 and class 12 results of 2017!

It is absolutely correct to remove this practice of giving grace marks because then equality is not practiced. But at the same times suddenly removing the policy is unfair for those who have given the exams because they were not told about this before. But from next year grace marks policy should be removed.

Moderation of marks is correct as it makes it fair for all children. I feel giving grace marks is something that should not be practised

Moderation policy was introduced to ensure uniformity in evaluation process. But, this has resulted badly as high cut-off marks were set by universities in order to ensure balance. So, Discontinuing this policy is a good one. On other side, scraping of Moderation policy should not be done after board exams as this would be a huge disappointment for all students, parents and teachers.

This is indeed a very good move by CBSE. It will give students who really study hard the correct platform and will help in implementing equality and uniformity in the education system.
