Hemalatha: Should People Who Don't Vote Be Fined?

Every single individual is responsible for a county's development. We directly or indirectly affect our society. We are electing our Chief Ministers. We are given that chance. But some of us don't use this chance. People don't cast their votes. As a citizen of our country it is our duty to vote. We should not hesitate to select our leader. I think people will do it without fail only if they are made to pay some fine. I feel if fine is levied people will vote at any cost. When we don't vote we shouldn't complain. We don't have the right to complain. Do you agree with me? Can you suggest any other measures?

Democracy is where wee follow some principles. It is true that everyone should vote but that doesn''t mean that we are forcing everyone to vote, there''s a difference between the two. We have freedom of choice and freedom to do anything with reasonable restrictions. If government plan to fine people who don''t cast vote, it is hampering their freedom even if it is for a good cause. There can be alternatives to promote more involvement of people in election process.

It is the duty of the people to vote if they also want to see the government that satisfies their needs and is the best for the progress of the nation. It may not always be so that the people do not want to but may be that they are unable to do so. To fine a every "person" for not doing so would be a little over the limits, however, giving them a chance to explain why they did so and then deciding to take appropriate measures would be much more justified.
