Athith and Abdul: How To Stop Overthinking?

Have you ever done something awkward in public and no matter how hard you try you just can’t seem to get it off your head? Ever kept thinking about a situation where you messed up? Or a moment in your day you just want to forget but it still comes back to haunt you the same night?

All of these situations in which you just can’t stop thinking about something comes under the unwanted human instinct of over thinking.

People may say it’s a mental or psychological disorder but it’s something that every human has.

Over thinking is thinking about something too much and for too long. It’s something that negatively impacts your mind. It restricts you from your happiness. An absolute burden to have, a huge weight on your shoulders. Nobody likes to think about a moment of mishap they faced during the day or a problem they encountered in their life that they just hate to remember. But over thinking just brings pain and regret. It influences the decisions you make in the future because you keep worrying about your past.

However there are ways to overcome it:

Change your view of fear

Whether you're afraid because you've failed in the past, or you're fearful of trying or over generalising  some other failure, remember that just because things did not work out before does not mean that has to be the outcome every time. Remember, every opportunity is a new beginning, a place to start again.

Be grateful

You can't have a regretful thought and a grateful thought at the same time, so why not spend the time positively? Every morning and every evening, make a list of what you are grateful for. Get a gratitude buddy and exchange lists so you have a witness to the good things that are around you.

Distract yourself into happiness

Sometimes it's helpful to have a way to distract yourself with happy, positive, healthy alternatives. Things like mediation, dancing, exercise, learning an instrument, knitting, drawing, and painting can distance you from the issues enough to shut down the overanalysis.

Because of overthinking, people can even go through depression and can harm themselves. We have been hearing about suicide cases of students(REASON- low grades). In my view, in such cases overthinking prevails, may be the child overthinks about now what would happen? what will my parents say? How will I face my friends ? Ultimately its overthinking which tells you about the stuff which doesn''t even exist. Ever seen something spooky in your room? Don''t worry this is also overthinking.
