Ananya: What Did Hiroshima & Nagasaki Taught Us?

I visited Hiroshima in Japan recently. Everyone knows about the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and what a devastating impact they had. But, until I came here, I was not aware of the magnitude of this destruction. Countless lives were lost that day, and in less than a minute, the entire city was reduced to ashes. The victims' accounts of these incidents are moving. Students in school, men and women working, young and old were killed indiscriminately. After the incident, their faces were unrecognisable. A child lost 13 members of her family.

The reason behind writing this article is to bring to light the fact that even after suffering so much damage, these people have rebuilt their lives. Like the phoenix, they have risen from the ashes. Not only have they recovered completely, they are also actively spreading awareness about the impacts of nuclear weapons and why they should be banned. However, many countries continue the production of nuclear missiles.

Just last year, North Korea tested a nuclear weapon. This has to stop and the sooner people all over the world realise this the better. The bomb which was deployed on Hiroshima was much less potent than the kind available at present. Approximately 140,000 people died due to the bombing in Hiroshima. Imagine the number of people that could be killed by such weapons now. And think about the children!

The only solution to this is Peace. It's something very fragile which needs to be promoted much more than it is now. We must realise that all of us are equal human beings and each one of us deserves to live out our lives in peace. In Hiroshima, children are often taken on school trips to the Peace Memorial Park to emphasize this. The next generation there knows the importance of peace.
