Ambika: Have We Reached The Pinnacle Of Fight Against Climate Change?

It's been some time since people, especially students worldwide, have been protesting against climate change and it makes me happy to know that it's finally happening. We've been too ignorant of the fact that Earth's burning up and we've been using fossil fuels at such an accelerated pace.

The possible destructive outcomes that we once used to read about in our social sciences textbook have turned to reality and yes, it's maddening and disturbing. What are we even trying to achieve? Where are we going with this? Has anyone ever thought of it? Probably not.

Well, I don't blame you for this. Just as we were told since the beginning to learn answers by rote to score good marks in exams, we're also often advised to take off our thinking caps and start minding our 'own business'. And trust me, when I ask what this business refers to, I don't get a straight answer. Because all I know is that, if I am not going to get clean air to breathe, how is this not supposed to be my business?

Only if our elders could understand that change doesn't necessarily need to come on its own. Change can be quicker and easier but only if everyone participates equally and sincerely.

Being a part of rallies/marches/protests makes you want to be a part of change. It has the power to fill you up with courage and confidence to do more and more.

Someone said, “It's not that everybody needs to do something big, it's the little things that matter most” and I have begun to believe in this saying. If we won't do anything, how will things happen? Estimates show that humans have just got 12 years before our fossil fuels get exhausted and the whole energy system turns upside-down. See what happened in Brazil! How could they let the lungs of the Earth, the Amazon forest burn for weeks? Not only did the fire displace the native people from their homes but it also destroyed their livelihood forever. Has this topic been taken up by the media in a big way? That’s the only way the common man will understand the implications of our man-made disasters.
