Aashnaa: Are Introverts Often Misunderstood?

If I ask you, "Who is an introvert?", I am sure you will say that an introvert is someone who doesn't talk. The official definition of an introvert is a person predominantly concerned with his/her own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things. Introverts do like to talk but only with people they are comfortable with and not to a room full of people they don't know. Also, introverts think before they speak instead of saying the first thing that comes to their mind. Contrary to popular belief, introverts are not all shy bookworms who don't like to talk. So the difference between introverts and extroverts is not social skills.

It is the way they recharge after being around people and how they re-gain energy. Asking an introvert to talk more is as rude as asking an extrovert to shut up. If the conversation doesn't interest them, introverts often become quiet and wander in their own world, which is their imagination. Introverts avoid small talk because they know that it is the white bread of conversation. There are no nutrients in it, just empty calories. We are raised believing that in order to be normal we have to be sociable. Our society benefits those who are extroverts. It is rare for the introvert to be celebrated. Even our school systems force introverts to be someone they are not. It is time for society to accept introverts and the things they can contribute to the community.

Does an introvert remain the same everywhere? There is a boy in our class who was actually an introvert but I could see him behaving as an extrovert when in home and whenever I see him in home, not in school.
