"Why Is God Used To Divide Us?," asks Aishwarya

Asks Aishwarya Nangia Of Venkateshwar International School, New Delhi

The holy Quran refers to God as “He is Allah, The One and Only”, the Bible as “I am the Lord; and there is none else.” and the Guru Granth Sahib as “Waheguru; the Supreme Being-creator of all.” Monotheism, which is the belief in one God, is a fundamental concept across all religions. We have always been taught that God is one; still God has often been used to divide us in the name of religion. Why? Wasn’t I told that God unifies, and not divides us?

God created man and bestowed on him the power and intellect to distinguish between right and wrong, but we completely messed it up. Man failed, hence the gods. Man created religion. When religion was created, it was because the world wasn’t so ‘narrow’ back then and each group created their own religion, language and culture as a unifying force. Religions were simply a way of life, common in the nature of messages it wanted to spread. However, with time, religious preachers started using religion to enforce control and ideas on fellow humans. Dogmatic beliefs, rituals and superstitions soon emerged and were imposed by religions, thus eluding the concept of religious harmony. The glorification of beliefs and a strong desire to be superior to people of other faith changed everything. Religious riots and communal violence have become the biggest causes of death on this planet.

The root cause of unrest amongst humans was never God, but humans themselves. While all along the way, religion just propagated peace and happiness, it is we who created evils out of it. A sound person wouldn’t use God to divide us, rather he would encourage spirituality through monotheism. All over the world, the rage over religion is still rife so we should nurture our next generation to look beyond the differences for the greater good of humanity because that's the only ‘option’ left to us right now.

Man considers himself as an "alpha-being" on this planet! he considers himself as the governor and protector..... he is the one who created the Almighty and he is the one who uses the sacred name of the Almighty to satisfy his greed! I totally agree with you!
