It’s My Mirror To Life

At 15, Mudit Muraka is a young filmmaker who has won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for his short film, The Mirror, which explores the social pressures that teens face. Muraka speaks to Times NIE on his filmy journey

What is your movie on?
My movie is about a young person’s struggle against stereotypes and prejudices. With the kind of world we live in, we’re supposed to be perfect with desirable traits. And anyone who doesn’t conform to that image of the perfect person is looked down upon, which I find hard to believe. All of us are born unique and different. We all have our own stories. My movie talks about a sense of having a notion of self.

Where did you get the idea to make this movie?
The idea came from the conversations I had with my mother and with the team of people who helped me write the script.

How long did you shoot every day?
Almost all the shooting was completed in one night, between 10 pm and  5 am.

What was the total cost?
I didn’t really spend any money on this movie. I  had a good camera and I borrowed some sound recording equipment from a friend so that I could record the narration properly. I composed the music on my MIDI pad.

What were the lessons learnt?
This movie made me feel better about being myself.  It has  taught me to keep my head high and be proud of myself no matter what happens.

Please tell us about challenges
The biggest obstacle was coming up with the narrative and the script. It took me almost 20 days to come up with the final idea. But I would say it was easy for me visualise but getting it to happen on screen was the toughest part.

How has this experience helped you in your studies?
The experience and the new understanding of faith and citizen journalism that I’ve developed will probably help me in my English class and my Social Studies class.

Tell us about Big B’s message
His message about the new generation of Indian filmmakers has inspired me to continue with movie-making. Hopefully, it will give Indian film-making some standing on the world stage.

What was your reaction on Tony Blair’s message?
He told me to continue to make movies.

What tips would you like to give GENy?
I don’t really think of myself as a role model. But  my movie tells people to be immature, silly and stupid but proud of being themselves.

"BAFTA was a dream come true. The power, the brilliance and the history of the place really soaks into you and makes you dream about having your name on one of those plaques"
