Have A Phobia Of Insects And Snakes

Deebashree Mohanty speaks with actor JIMMY SHERGILL and director Amitabha SINGH to find out more about the children’s film Shortcut Safari

Shortcut Safari was a challenge from the time the film was conceptualised. From shooting in the dense forest of Daang in Gujarat, to getting this film to the multiplexes,  Jimmy Shergill and director Amitabha Singh recount their journey.

As actor Jimmy Shergill to describe his experience working in Shortcut Safari and pat comes the reply - "scary. period". The seasoned actor who has never shot in a jungle before, said it was an exprience worth cherishing. And it is not the ferocious animals that were giving Shergill sleepless nights. "I am very frightened of snakes and insects. They look weird and sting. Everytime I had a creepy feeling in my clothes, I would stop shooting. The spot boys had a gala time mocking me," Shergill says laughingly.

Shortcut Safari revolves around seven children from the city who get lost in a forest while on a safari. "Hats off to the people who live in this dense forest. I have often wondered how tribals live in such abject conditions. I saw it myself," Shergill recounts, adding that the concept of this children's film is the real hero!

Ask him about the experience of shooting among tribals and Shergill tells you it was an opportunity he was pining for. “I was very excited to know that the tribes who treated Shivaji Maharaj when he used to get injured during a war were still alive. They knew the place in their fingertips and gave us valuable advise," he tells you.

Like every children's film that is made in India, even Shortcut Safar had to go through many hurdles before it saw light of day in the theatres acrsoss India. Though the film premiered in November 2014 at National Children’s Film Festival, it took two years to hit the big screens. “It was the longest war that I waged for a film. I’ve  engaged with the business space of cinema for the first time and I have come to realise that in the fraternity, we thrive mainly on making money off each other. At the end of the day, the source of funds and the producer gets squashed in this melee,” director Amitabha Singh has to say about the business of cinema.

The talented director feels that the need of the hour is to face the world as it is. It is important to engage with real people and believe in what they are doing. That is the only reality. There is a reason why only a handfull of children’s films are made in India. "Actually we don't have the right people for this job. It is a sad thing that makers are not sensitised and have zilch understanding about this kind of content. A lot of content that is passed on under the garb of children’s content is actually for adults," says Shergill.
