Simran Kohli: Reservation Is A WANT, Not A NEED

The caste system in India is a hierarchy of a powerful social system which has its roots buried deep in Ancient India and has managed to transform into a basis for educational and job reservations in India. At the time of Indian struggle movement upliftment in the status of lower caste was demanded by asking for reservation, specially for the Dalits and the untouchables keeping in mind their social status and the treatment received by them from the society. At that point of time, reserving seats for the lower caste had become the need of the hour in order to establish the idea of a democratic country justly. It was essential that they received the same respect, position, status and enjoy the same privileges and access to public facilities as that of the upper caste. This was a big step in the Indian history as it was a step towards poviding everyone what was rightfully deserved by them. This decision led to many transformations and did justice to the aim of upliftment of the social status of the lower caste.

However, in the 21st century the topic of “RESERVATION” has become a matter of concern and debate. After serving its purpose for several decades, reservation now is being used to exploit opportunities and gain access to educational institutes and jobs without making an extra effort. It has become a medium of hatred, jealousy and agony among friends.

General category students are now feeling alienated and have started doubting their own capabilities after seeing that a child scoring less than them is getting admission in a prestigious institute only because of his/her caste as a result of this practice.

Reservation on the basis of caste is no longer a ‘NEED’ but a ‘WANT’ which is poisoning the minds of the youth and hampering the future of the country. Both, the general category as well as some of  the reserved category students agree that reservation should no longer be a measuring scale of their caliber and potentials. They should be given a fair chance to compete and to prove themselves. The need of the hour has changed and now the only requirement is to enable everyone to get their basic needs fulfilled and provide income security to all. This should be applicable for those surviving on daily wages or those becoming more poor by the day and are not benefiting from the initiatives taken by the government. It is time that we gear up and together bring about a change to make things fair and equal.

i do agree

Reservations are still not necessary. This makes a talented person from a upper caste lose his opportunity. This also makes people from lower caste are lethargic. Not all are like that. But I don''t think it is necessary.

yes i truly agree that reservation is not a need but is a want as every student in a campus should feel equal to the other but i too say that government is taking appropriate measures other than that we as responsible citizens can come up together to bring up a change

Vishnupriya Saji Army Public School, PRTC

I truly agree to the point that reservation is no more a need but a want. People who are really talented and are having the true potential are losing their chances , this has led to great problems in many parts of the country.

ABHIGYAN SINGH Harmony International School , Kharghar

I agree

INTAKHAB ALAM KHAN (KHAN REBEL) SYED ABID HUSSAIN SR.SEC.SCHOOL NEW DELHI 110025

We live in a free country and this freedom is a gift of democracy to us.In my opinion caste reservation should be banned because unreserved students are not showing interest in government jobs, reservation based examinations. revesrvation system was started 50 years ago for low caste people due to some reasons. Now the thing has been changed all have their own strengths ,ability and especially right to do.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I agree because the time when reservations were introduced discrimination on the basis of caste used to take place but today hardly such things happen. The only purpose reservations are serving these days is providing admission to those who do not deserve to be where they are.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I personally feel reservation in the 21st century India should be class based, not caste based.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

I too agree totally with all of you. This reservation concept was required 60 years back when things were really bad for Dalits. However, it is not the case anymore. Help is being provided and all opportunities cannot be spoon-fed. As they are getting everything for granted, they take advantage of it, and without having any level or qualification, they enter into various sectors. It is unfair that there is a high percentage of reservation due to which talented people of upper class suffer.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Opportunities should be given to the meritorious and not to the oppressed only.

PrithviRaj Singh Rathore RPVV,Surajmal Vihar

I strongly agree.

Ronit.R National Hill View Public School

I truly believe that reservation has made the task of the general class tougher in whatever task it is .Reservation was meant to be there only till two decades after the writing of the constitution ,but it still continues after 70 years of our independence .What a shame!

Antara Bose Shri Shikshayatan School

I do agree reservation is not a fair move in this era.. This reservation was alright upto a certain extent. But now it is turning out to be discrimination...The deserving people are losing several opportunities and this is just unfair and should be banned immediately

Naresh Choudhary Sree Narayana Vidya Bhavan

i agree

ANAMOY MOITRA DAV PUBLIC SCHOOL (SR)(DAYANAND VIH

Reservation might have had a noble purpose initially but now it is seen that it is doing more harm than good. So it is better to do away with it.

Dikshant Garg NEW GREEN FIELD SCHOOL(KALKAJI_ALAK

I also strongly agree with u.but thinking in the other way do you really think that we general category ppl are really bothered by the reservation system. dr Ambedkar raised the amendment for Dalits as they demanded that but today the upper caste ppl or general caste ppl, not even a once raised a strong demand for reservation or have filed any petition for it.actually we are the one who is responsible for this.

Dikshant Garg NEW GREEN FIELD SCHOOL(KALKAJI_ALAK

We only say that "it''s fine to let it be like this only and topic gets over" isn''t?

ISHANI MODERN HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

I agree. The aim should be to provide everyone with equal opportunity, not give some people a free pass. People of lower castes are not inferior in any respect. Only people who are truly deprived mentally or physically should be given the choice of reserved seats.

Gagana M D SCHOOL VIVEKANANDA SAHAKARANAGAR

Now that all the casts have equal rights.....i strongly disagree with the reservation system. It truly "is no longer a ‘NEED’ but a ‘WANT’ "
