Siddhant Says India Has Let Down All Non-Cricketing Sports!

In a country with a pool of young sporting talent, its absurd that only cricket gets all the attention. With the intense media glare, multiple cricketing formats and the glamour associated with the sport, cricket naturally attracts the attention of young talent. Football has lost its importance to a great extent. Except for Goa and West Bengal, no other states are interested in it. When Gopichand won the All England Badminton Championship in Britain, no one cheered because in the same week, Harbhajan Singh took a hat trick and VVS Laxman scored 281 runs in the Kolkata Test against Australia. In 2011, India won the Asian Champions Trophy after defeating Pakistan. Hockey India announced a paltry Rs 25,000 cash reward for the Indian team! Even the cruel, unjust and inhuman treatment meted out to players in non-cricketing sports is highly demoralizing.

Last year, over 600 disabled athletes from across India, in Ghaziabad for the 15th National Para-Athletic Championship, were crammed into a couple of partially constructed buildings. The Kabaddi men and women are hardly even acknowledged for the medals they win. India’s ice hockey team has been representing India at international tournaments for the last seven years. Last year, the squad was forced to scout for money via online media to participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation Challenge Cup in Kuwait. If India does not get its act together soon, the tremendous explosion of sporting fervour and talent throughout the country will only be met with tragic sighs and dejected spirits.

Non cricketing sports are not given much importance in India. To encourage kids for non cricketing sports, schoolso should include the other sports in the syllabus, teach the students to play them and give them facilities. This way students will develop interest in non cricketing sports.

Yes it is true. India has let non cricketing sports down. Only a 20percent of the public knows whats going on in hockey. It is just for a name sake it is said as our national game. This is just an example.

Although sports like football or baseball are really popular in foreign countries, these are not given much preference in India as compared to cricket. The main cause behind this problem is the huge fan base in India and some consistent success at international level only in this sport. Also in most schools- students are given coaching of cricket rather than badminton or some other sport. This also one of the reason why the upcoming generation is inclining towards cricket too.

Very true,India only got two medallion Rio.the reason being that there is a huge fan base for cricket.look at USA they give importance to all the sports.India only participated in only 10-20 sports whi le USA had participated in the sports. We should promote leagues like ISL(Indian super league )PBL(premier badminton league),IWL (Indian wrestling league)and Hero hockey India league.

Sports other than cricket are considered inferior to cricket. For example only a handful of people will know who are the best top Table Tennis players, Chess players, Badminton players and so on. I believe that these sports can be promoted by broadcasting more of the games of these sports on the television on more prominent channels like Star Sports.

No, I believe this notion needs to be proved wrong now. With the Pro Kabaddi League and the football matches in the country, other sports are now increasingly becoming famous. Though cricket still has a special corner in the hearts of many Indians, India is doing its best to encourage other sports. With olympic Champs Sindhu and Sakshi, batminton and kabaddi are gaining popularity. I believe now people need to quit this complaint saying ''only cricket in India''.

Playing cricket is considered to be superior and other games are considered to be roadside clutter. India provides the largest no. of spectators for cricket (only for cricket). Cricket fans become immensely popular and other sportsperson stand out to be nothing in terms of popularity, respect, admiration etc. I think to solve this matter first and foremost, the level of other games such as football, handball etc. should be raised. Students should be made to play these games.
