Sanjana Mehta: Blame Us, Not Social Media

We often hear how technology and social media make the ‘(im)perfect’ combination to poison childrens’ minds and divert them from their responsibilities and studies, not to mention how fake ID scams often result in not-so-happy endings. But amidst all these passionate speeches we fail to realise that social media is just an instrument to harmonise the world and it is we who misuse it. Some may argue that social media brings us closer to those beyond our physical reach, but takes us away from those near us. But it is we who forget to strike a balance between social media and real life. How can your day be complete without scrolling through Facebook and Instagram feeds to know what your friends are up to or getting your daily dose of laughter from Whatsapp jokes? Social media is also a vital source of spreading awareness on social issues and launch of campaigns like #PrayforParis and Make in India. Earlier generations couldn’t exchange phone numbers or email IDs, so they lost touch once they moved forward in life. Social media helps you to stay in touch with old friends no matter where you are.

Exactly! We cannot blame social media for all the ill ailments in the society. After all, it''s just a mean, making good or bad out of it depends completely on us.

We can stop using social media whenever we want. If we are not satisfied with social media, we can always delete our account from that particular site. We are responsible for all the ill effects of social media. We need to stop blaming social media for all the damage we are causing to the society, think for a minute and admit our mistake.

Well-said. Why do we lay emphasis on the negative aspect of social media only? How can we forget that our human world has also got advanced with the advancement of technology? Gone are the days, when trunk calls were made by people living far apart. Thanks to Skype now! GPS has made our baffled lives more easy as now we can configure the routes much better. Awareness can be spread through social media. The list of the advantages of social media & technology is also too long!!!

It depends on how and for what we use social media for? Everything have its own positive and negative side.

True. In fact social media is a medium to contact with our relatives and friends. It is who we use it in wrong ways and get addicted to it. We should have control in ourselves and refrain from social media.

Yeah absolutely social media is a driving force that makes all things sophisticated but it also needs intensive care which prevents us from addiction.

Yes I completely agree social media is being demonised in a wrong manner. It is just as an instrument invented for our development and aid. It depends on us how we use it. We get so much addicted to it that we forget their is life beyond it. But the quality can be improved by the improvement of methods and screens which have less impact on eyes as well as individual health.
