Sanghamitra: Life Of A Nomadic Hawker Is Tough

The vehicles honked away and spewed dust. Summer in Kochi city has always been this way… tiring and boiling. It was the same routine for me... the same roads… the same tuition classes. As I walked on the raised platform in front of the park I noticed something different. A little girl smiled at me. Her loose brown hair touched her shoulders. Her mother cradled a baby in a crib that hung from the branches of a tree. Her father arranged glass bangles of various colours in a box. It seemed to be a happy and content family to me, something so unknown, so rare in the city.

Next day, the little girl and her father sat with glass bangles and were calling out for customers. Her mother was busy stirring food in a cooking pot while her brother was sleeping. I walked up to them and bought a few sets of bangles. I asked the girl her name and in her baby voice she replied “Munni”. I spoke to them for a while and found out that they were a nomadic family from north India. Theirs seemed to be a simple and happy life. Munni and I became good friends. Every day I would spend some time with them.

After about a month, I saw an article in the newspaper…‘All the hawkers on footpaths were moved by the police as a part of town renovation’. At first I was enraged, then I consoled myself. The family would have left anyway, after a month or two. The city as usual was crammed with vehicles. I stopped by the park. The city had forgotten Munni and her folks already. A few bangles lay scattered here and there. Someone walked over them, crushing the bangles into smithereens.
