Ramana: The Inside Story Of Social Media

The 21st century has seen us making rapid strides in every field. But without doubt, one of the greatest inventions has come in the form of social media. But is it truly an achievement, in an era where smart phones have already become the new addiction?

These days, social media has become an important forum for making "online friends". This term "online friends", doesn't necessarily say that they are friends who are worth anything to each other. They might be people who ‘like’ each other's profile. Most people who are extremely active in their social media accounts, usually have more online friends than real friends.

This leads to them feeling isolated in a small group, where they eventually lose all their friends. It’s really sad to see how social media has become an obsession with young people. Almost every person who owns a smart phone from the age of 10 to 50 years has a social media account. Most of them are hell-bent on getting fame through social media. People take photographs and selfies to post or share on Facebook or Instagram and then wait anxiously for people to ‘like’ them. They even go to the extent of feeling depressed if they don’t get enough ‘likes’!

However, even though social media is dangerous — due to online bullying, fraud etc — communication worldwide has become considerably easier, thanks to the online texting platforms they offer. One can keep in touch with friends and relatives living abroad too.

Social media is a danger if misused or used in excess. So focus on your life rather than trying to improve your feed. Gradually, social media will pose an eminent danger to all of us. It may disturb our everyday life.
