Muskaan Says It's Time To Admit That Depression Is Real
Muskaan Bhatia, class XII, Apeejay School, New Delhi

“Dude, I am depressed”, said my 15 year old friend. Two decades earlier, no teenager would have said this but now we hear this on a daily basis from other people of our age group. Not only this, the statistics about teenage runaways, drug abuse, alcoholism, pregnancy, eating disorders and suicides are increasing at an alarming rate. The mutual link to these entire crises is depression. Teenagers are known for being moody, rebellious, egocentric and emotional. But while this is a normal adolescent behaviour, teenage depression is a real disorder which affects one out of 5 teens. Adolescents today are faced with stresses that were unknown to previous generations and are dealing with them in an often self – destructive way causing depression. According to the experts, Teen depression is a serious mental health problem that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in activities. It affects how your teenager thinks, feels and behaves, and it can cause emotional, functional and physical problems. There are many contributing factors behind teen depression. Academic stress, peer pressure, social anxiety, relationship problems, separation from parents, low self-esteem, physical or emotional neglect or may be inherited from a depressed parent. Teen depression is a reality and is affecting younger and younger people. Teenagers who feel hopeless and worthless, negative trend in their academic performance, considerably change in appetite and weight, destructive and/or defiant behaviour, lonely, tired etc for more than 3 weeks, may have symptoms of the same. They should not ignore this and must talk to parents, teachers, friends, doctor or someone with whom they feel comfortable sharing this and seek a treatment for this.

We can fight depression solely by confiding in someone (or something). The depressed need to get up and talk to anyone, be it a parent, friend or even a pet. I understand that that might be hard, for a depressed person would not want to be judged. In such cases, writing all our feelings in a paper or in a notebook would really help. Maintaining a diary is an excellent option in that aspect.

Depression, the word links to some dismayed thoughts of suicide and health problems. If someone is depressed than of course its a serious issue. But, what would help is a good counseling, motivation by friends and family a break form stress and studies. Moreover teachers can play a vital role in helping a child overcoming depression. We can overcome depression by expressing our problems and emotions to someone like a teacher, a parent, friend or a pet. Sometimes writing in a diary can help. Elders, especially teachers must keep a close watch on every student and check for symptoms. A friend must watch out for him/her and constantly being optimistic. Despite the fact that the person requires privacy ,the person must be checked upon to prevent suicide attempts.

The main reason that the students get trap into the cage of depression is the pressure of studies. We see that mostly the students who are about to give the board exams or who have given the board games commit suicide. It''s because that the schools give so much pressure that the student does not find any other way instead of committing suicide. I feel that the schools should take some serious actions to stop this.

Depression is a kind of medical illness only and can be treated by some medical therapies, people facing depression should be given space but should not be left alone. Having pets is the best way to fight depression specially dogs,as they will never let the person feel lonely . Most of the times reason behind being depressed is having no one to talk to or to share your feelings with.

Depression is not some sort of mental disorder or some disease that cannot be cured. Depression is caused when we are anxious about something or when things don''t go the way we want it to be. I think being transparent with parents or teachers helps to come out of depression. Who else can understand us better than our own people??

Depression is one of the serious issues faced among the teenagers now a days. According to me one should have a healthy and friendly relation with the family members where they should be able to share their joy,feelings,liking...etc. Secondly active participation in various activities like writing in a NIE forum, which will help them to find a open valve for the cause of depression to flow out.

Depression mainly comes from a major bad incident happened in the past or from isolation. So, it''s better to talk and share your misery or sorrow with someone else be it your friends, parents or anyone else. The listener should be patient and attentive while listening to the depressed person otherwise he/she would give him an inappropriate suggestion or advice.

Today, depression is indeed the major crisis on the run which has left many lay in the clatters. Specifically considering the youth depression is one of the major woes to tackle now because if dragged anytime further it might prove being very problematic to deal with.
