Call For A Little More Sensitivity Towards Old People

As senior citizens, all  they want in the twilight years of their lives is some peace, good health and a safe neighbourhood. But the growing number of  crimes against senior citizens — from murders and assaults to robbery  — is proving that India is no longer a safe haven.  There are 100 million elderly in India, of these, 20 lakh aged couples live alone.

According to a report by the National Crime Records Bureau, there has been a 23 per cent spurt in crimes against them. In an aging nation, it is not just the crime that paints a sordid picture. It is the fact that they are not able to cope with the advent of technology and there is little being done to help them come to terms with it, which is disturbing.

Barring the launch of ‘special’ tools and some initiatives (read below) by school kids there is very little that can be termed ‘senior friendly’.

Help grandparents fight loneliness with technology

Two students launched a Silver Surfer programme to teach grandparents how to use the internet, tabs, mobile apps, social network, do internet banking and write blogs...

Q: tell us about the initiative... The programme aims to educate senior citizens about technology and what they can do with it. The three modules will be taught in sessions held on weekends before lunch (10am- noon). More than 100 grandparents have attended these sessions since 2015.

Q: Why did you call it 'Silver Surfer'? It is based on a superhero of the same name. This superhero has powers such as super strength and endurance which resonates with our grandparents.

Q: How did you get this idea?  I realised that given the busy life we all lead, it’s difficult to be in touch with our own grandparents. Our mission was to re-equip our grandparents with the tools of technology, to enable them to connect better with their tech- savvy family members.

Q: What were the challenges you faced? The biggest challenge was to implement our thoughts and ideas into a campaign. The next challenge was developing the patience needed to manage and teach our grandparents!

What is the programme?

The Silver Surfer Programme launched by Vibhor Rohatgi and Suyesha Dutta of Shri Ram School, New Delhi, aims to keep the elderly connected to the outside world via technology.

Senior citizens have been and always will be a major part of every society. Why not create a platform where we can gift ''grandparents'' with technology and in-return get some guidance and inspiration on how to achieve more and go- get everything from all the experienced beings in the society? This way everyone will be taken care of and will have some worth and importance in the society.
