Bhanushri Jaisimha: Count Them While We Still Can

Tiger is the mightiest cat on earth and is India’s national animal. It plays a pivotal role in the wellbeing and diversity of the ecosystem. It is a top predator and is at the apex of the food chain, thereby maintaining the balance in the ecosystem. Ever since life has begun on earth, many species have naturally gone extinct. Some might give credit to the process of natural selection and even geological and climatic changes. Though this is true, human activities have greatly accelerated this process. With just 1411 tigers left in India as per the most recent count; this has become an issue of great concern. Relentless poaching and clearing of habitat for agriculture have been the main drivers of this decline, though demand for tiger skins and parts for “medicinal” purposes have become increasingly significant threats in contemporary years. If these trends continue, the tiger may become extinct and leave behind a scar, which will cause the entire ecosystem to collapse. The Government of India has also started many projects to save this charismatic species such as the “Project Tiger”. If we do not act now, then the tiger may only live in stories, pictures and legends; never to wander on the soil of this beautiful Earth.

With just one tiger, WWF can protect around 25,000 acres of forest. To save tigers, we need to protect the forest habitats across Asia where they live. By saving these places, we will not only allow tigers to roam freely but also many other endangered species that live there and form the very thing that makes our planet unique – biodiversity. Healthy tiger populations equal healthy ecosystems.
