Aparna Says: We Need A New Examination System

I sometimes wonder, why the Indian education system is so competitive. Is it because children need to feel that they are on 'the top' to continue working hard? Or is it because we are motivated to study only to obtain a 'golden-cup' from our parents? If this were the case, why would all of us voluntarily take part in dramas, cultural events, organize events or be heads of the 'Baccha Party' in our societies?

I believe that every child is born with a wonderful gift- resolution. Talent is secondary, when we want to do something- when we are driven against all odds to work towards it. Why then, when we have Annual Days and Dramas and Sports Days every two months, interspersed in our academics, does it not occur to anyone to change the examination system? Don't extracurricular events remind educationalists that children will study well enough without exams? Why can't this time be channelised to do something creative, to express ourselves, to influence others, to learn a new skill, or just to consolidate 'All in a Day's Work'?

Or else, why not have surprise tests, oral 'exams', and application based tests? Imagine, how wonderful it would be to draw the rulers in your history-exam, or to sing out the Periodic Table Song to your teacher and be graded for it!! Imagine being graded on a project where you have to teach a junior an English lesson in the best possible way!

It would be fantastic, wouldn't it?

Fantastic idea!Well said Aparna!I too sometimes think over this matter and try in my best way to persuade my friends to think about it.It would be really amazing if there were no "EXAMS"which are just to test our memorization skills. It would be equally fascinating if the Education system introduced the new exam pattern which you mentioned above!

I PREFER OBJECTIVE TYPE PAPERS There are many advantages to objective tests. They can, for example, significantly reduce marking time and analysis of individual questions is more feasible. This allows teachers/tutors to quickly identify areas where only a few candidates respond correctly or where most candidates choose the same incorrect option and try to correct any misconceptions. Also questions can be more easily pre-tested in order to evaluate their effectiveness and level of difficulty.

NICE APARNA I JUST EXPRESSED THE SYSTEM I NEEDED

Definitely, we need a change. But, now also our question paper too contains such questions where we need to first give analysis to the question and then give the answer. Also, there are some questions where we have to give our opinions, views, suggestions. I would also like to tell, that there are many activities in the school like oral test, recitations, writing skills etc for which we are evaluated. Hopeful to see more positive changes, great article!

Reading this article brings a big smile ony face Aparna! I hate this education system especially our exam system. We''ve to gain knowledge apply it in our life. Learning should be fun but now it has become a stress. A student who by - hearts and vomits gets appreciated but a person who spends time with nature and learns on his own gets degraded. What a bad system is this? Sudden tests which is enjoyable, we don''t have to by - heart instead apply what we understood!

Different ways of expressing our talents! Tests should act as our mirrors instead it should not make us shed tears. We should be happy to go to school a put a smile on our face when our teacher enters the class. Wow! That would be great!

I have noticed among my classmates that some are comfortable listening to the teacher and can answer on the same day, on the spot, when asked questions some love to listen to songs and would love to learn songs for their exams too while some of us can absorb best when we read and assimilate. This was why I mentioned oral, application-based, and surprise tests.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! And maybe this competitiveness is killing our humanity. When were small, we were taught to be good but now we taught to compete. Though competition has always been in human nature but an excess of anything can be harmful too!

infact this education system is making us a factory product with a batch no. and a date of mfg. HAHA we are taught to become what people want from us not for what we are born for...i totally agree with u ......but change is in our hands and we can do it....someone said...IF YOU DON''T LIKE SOMETHING,FOLLOW IT ,REACH THE TOP ,CHANGE IT!!

GARIMA GARG DL D.A.V. MODEL SCHOOL, SHALIMAR BAGH, DELHI

The examination system doesn''t need any change but it needs a quick improvement for sure. And of course, being graded for the things you mentioned in the last paragraph would be a great fun.

Very nice idea Aparna .What you have said in the article is right. If oral exams are conducted ,the creativity of the students will be improved. And by conducting oral exams the particular student will gain confidence. And if maths tables and periodic table can be sung in a song. This will make the particular student remember the maths formula and elements in the periodic table.

Moksha Shrivastava BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (NOIDA)

Great Idea but Aparna we can''t have oral exams as it does''nt allow to enhance writing skills. Rest of your ideas is quiet good.

Anisha CLARENCE PUBLIC SCHOOL

I Say that it would be good to get a change in the examination system, where as oral tests may make us forget our art of writing, but as change is a law of nature,it would be good for all schools to adapt to these kind of changes,I would prefer a objective type of question paper which would help in time management and be helpful for the teachers to correct in a short time.

REALLY NICE..... ND WORTHY , BUT HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CHANGE
