Anunidhi Sharma Writes On Crimes Against Women

Crimes against women show no signs of abating. NGOs, human rights watchdogs and several women's rights organisations use the media as a platform to raise concerns and carry out candlelight marches to show contempt for the perpetrators of the crime and solidarity with the victims.

But are these actions enough to stop crimes? There are always two ways to solve any problem. One is to identify and resolve the root cause of the problem, thus preventing the crime from taking place and second is a reactive approach where the event should be handled appropriately.
Let us look at the first proactive measure. The patriarchal system in India makes man superior to a woman by giving the authority to control the  actions taken. This should be changed to an equal rights and equal control system at every stage of society, starting from the smallest unit family to larger families. Males of the family need to be trained to give respect to women both from the family and even those who are not. The fear of law should also be reinforced by delivering path breaking judgments to give maximum punishment to criminals.
Coming to a reactive approach,  the first is to enable women to fight back by means of force, ‘tools’ like electric shock device, pepper spray, Judo-Karate, etc. The law should also protect women fighting against criminals and others supporting her should also be rewarded under the self-protection or women protection acts.
Public figures should be made more accountable and punished if they make disparaging remarks against victims. People who pass offensive comments against women in public or social media should be condemned and socially boycotted. Laws should stop politicians from contesting elections if they believe in irresponsibly giving misleading statements which tacitly support such abhorrent criminals and disrespect victims. We need a complete cleansing of the system by having non-bailable hearings till judgment is pronounced. Let us all take a pledge to work towards a crime-free country.
