Akshita: My Experience With The US School

Nothing has influenced me more than my experience in the US, especially the school I went to. I studied at Crest Hill Middle School, Denver, Colorado. This school only had classes VII and VIII since classes I to VI was elementary school and classes IX to XII was high school.

On my first day of school, I was surprised to learn that everybody was given an individual schedule of classes. Unlike schools in India, in the US, each subject teacher has his or her own classroom and students have to go to them. Students have lockers with combination locks. It was a struggle to whip through and piece together numbers to open these lockers, but that strain vanished after the first few days.

Lunch breaks were divided into three batches or clusters and everyone went to the humongous cafeteria hall at their designated time.

To help the newcomers, class VIII students had formed a group called the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs). If it wasn’t for them, we would have been  lost in the new school. I had just one friend, but our classes didn’t match and we only met during lunch break. Luckily, during free hours, students were allowed to go to the library. There were never ending rows of interesting books and I spent many hours there.

All the teachers were very kind and patient in teaching me how things worked there. Each day at Crest Hill Middle School was interesting because I learnt something new everyday.

The most important life lesson I  learnt is that will power and confidence are required to be unique and different in a group of students with mixed cultures. We may meet a lot of people in life. Some may be good to us and may accept us the way we are. A few others may not be very open, but all of them leave their impression on us and we evolve as a person by learning something from everybody. When we came back to India, I never had any inhibitions in accepting my new environment. I must mention that the teachers and the students here were more than welcoming.

I am not studied in US schools whether I am studying in Indian School as I the difference is that in India students have to memorize the things where no intelligence is used except mathematics whereas in US the maximum subjects have to be studied on the basis of their intelligence and have a creative mind.

The type of education India''s schools provide is beyond amazing. However, US is a fully developed country and therefore its schools must be having several facilities which our schools are planning to have in the near future.
