Aarcha: Always Value Your Dear Ones

Happy, smiling faces. The aroma of traditional food. The warm, intoxicating yet, familiar smell around the house. This is what most people imagine when they think of their grandparents. It's such a great relationship, filled with love, bickering and siding with each other. But one only realises the value of grandparents when you lose them.

I vividly remember the times I played under the sun with my cousins, with my grandfather screaming at us to play in the shade. While my cousins went indoors, I told my grandfather how nice I felt to play in the open.

My grandfather’s death affected me a lot. But, not at that time. I was young and naive when he died, but I realised his worth when there was a gun salute just before he was lowered into the ground.

He was a renowned journalist and writer in Kerala. The award bestowed upon him is framed and hangs on the wall. I lost a loving grandfather whose value I never realised. There was so much I could have learnt from him, but I did not. That feeling you have when you lose someone precious cannot be put into words. Just think of a stone being lowered into your guts. Now multiply the pain by a million. That is how you can imagine one-fourth of the pain that you will go through.

I have realised that life is like a train. Our parents, friends, grandparents and family will be with us. But there are many stops and they will get down. All you can do is move on. But, remember they have a lot more value than you give them credit for.
