Upcoming Engineering Courses

Education counsellor Pratibha Jain lists a few upcoming Bachelor's engineering programmes in India which offer good prospects

Engineering is an inter disciplinary field of study. Mechanical, electronic and computer engineering continue to be popular options for students because the theories of these areas are integrated in all upcoming technologies including automated machines and `smart' communica tion devices which incorporate artificial intelligence, robotics and the internet of things. Here are a few other upcoming options that students can consider:

AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING
This field of engineering is in the limelight as it enables researchers to design cost effective satellites, aircraft, spacecraft and space-launch capabilities. Aeronautical engineers work with aircraft that stay within as well as outside the earth's atmosphere such as aeroplanes, helicopters, rockets, satellites and spacecraft.
Subjects taught: Avionics, airplane performance stability and control, instrumentation, aerodynamics, gas dynamics, wind tunnel testing, wind engineering, vibration and aero elasticity, air navigation, aircraft evaluation, rockets and missiles, computational fluid dynamics, automatic flight control systems, radio and communication, flight dynamics.
Offered at: Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur); Hindustan University, Chennai; Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Dehradun.

GENETIC ENGINEERING
Genetic engineering is leading to innovative solutions in the agro and medical world. Applications in agriculture have led to higher yield and hybrid varieties of crops. Additionally, human genetic engineering, though upcoming, is still in its nascent stages. It aims to improve medical diagnostics and cure genetically related aberrations.
Subjects taught: Biology of vectors, recombinant DNA technology, gene therapy, genome mapping, stem cell biology and microarray technology. Research projects include sequencing of chloroplast genome, DNA barcoding of organisms, RNA in terference in plants, molecular diagnosis of viral pathogens and stem cell study.
Offered at: SRM University, Chennai; Bharath University, Chennai; and Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna. Some IITs offer genetic engineering courses as electives within broader fields such as biotechnology or biological sciences.

BIOTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING
This field of engineering applies its principles to chemistry, genetics, bio-chemistry and microbiology. It uses technology to understand and research bio-organ isms, micro-organisms and all living cell functions.
Subjects taught: Applications of bio-technology in subject areas such as genetics, energy, virology, ecology, immunology, biophysics, biostatistics, fisheries, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, molecular biology, insecticides, fertilisers and animal husbandry.
Offered at: IITs (Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati); NIT Warangal; NSIT Delhi; Thapar University; Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT); Delhi Technological University; Anna University; BIT Mesra; Maulana Azaad National Institute National Institute of Technology; University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
Petroleum engineering focuses on the exploration and production of oil and gas. Students gain a thorough knowledge of all major technical aspects of the hydrocarbon value-chain and strategic techno-commercial issues relevant to the domain.
Subjects taught: Rock and fluid properties, petroleum production, system design petroleum refining and petrochemical technology, safety, health and environment management, enhanced oil recovery, petroleum engineering economics, membrane technology, separation processes, hydrogen and fuel cells, environmental regulation of oil and gas, reservoir simulation, drilling process design and optimisation, pipeline transportation of oil and gas, strengths of materials, corrosion engineering, energy conservation and recovery, gas turbines, etc.
Offered at: IIT Mumbai, Indian School of Mines University (ISM), Dhanbad; Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT); University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES); Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU); Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) Pune;MS Engineering College, Bengaluru; LD College of Engineering Ahmedabad; GH Patel College of Engineering, Gujarat.

A brainchild of The Times of India, the world’s leading English newspapers, Times NIE nurtures progress and innovation. Adapted from the international concept, Times Newspaper in Education program (Times NIE) was initiated in India in 1985.

Today we have over 3000 schools and over 9 lac students subscribing to the programme, spanning 16 cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Jaipur.

The Times of India Student edition, a customized student newspaper exclusively for the students, packs a powerful punch in terms of content that leads to a smarter and superior learning experience. The information is crafted such that it finds use in classroom discussions, thus making it relevant and current. It truly gives education a new dimension by fostering the simple habit of reading which in turn paves the way for a confident, informed and aware individual. A newspaper that inspires young minds and equips them to face challenges of today’s world, making way for global citizens.

Empowering students with new cutting-edge knowledge through various educative and informative activities is a commitment and tradition of Times NIE. The programme serves as a catalyst of education and interaction, as well as a window into the minds of the quintessential Indian youth. On a significant scale Times NIE comprises diverse interesting activities and events that boost the child’s passion for learning, while revealing hidden talent.

While you are aware that The Times of India is among the leading English Newspapers across the world, it has consummated its position as an everlasting winner. With several international awards and recognitions to its credit, The Times of India and Times NIE have validated an enduring tradition of setting the highest benchmarks in every respect. We have been awarded with the two most prestigious awards, Times NIE - World’s No.1 NIE program and The Times of India, Student Edition - World’s No.1 Newspaper for the youth in 2006 by the celebrated World Association of Newspapers (WAN). In 2008 we were honoured by the International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA), yet another international recognition for ‘Youth Audience Development’. In 2013 we were again honoured by the celebrated World Association of Newspapers (WAN) as the ‘Times NIE - World’s Best Youth Engagement Program’.

Times NIE has grown remarkably over the last three and a half decades, touching millions of children across more than 16 Indian cities. Our absolute commitment towards the fledgling generation remains undiluted and our greatest strength lies in the school partnership and commitment.
