I Want To Style The Entire Nation

DESIGNER PROFILES

Rhea Kapoor sounds just like her sister Sonam Kapoor. She loves to style outfits for celebrities, has a passion for movies and admires her father Anil Kapoor’s dedication to Indian cinema. She tells Deebashree Mohanty that she can’t live without her two loves — designing and films

What is your first love, styling or producing Bollywood films?

I just love styling outfits for celebrities and people in general. I am the official stylist at my home. Would love to be the official stylist for the entire country. We have some great looking men and women in India but they do not know how to dress properly and what accessories to carry. That’s where a stylist comes in.

How is a stylist different from a fashion designer?

A fashion designer is responsible for an overall outfit while a stylist will tell you exactly what will suit you for what occasion. He/she will also help you pick the right shoes and accessories to go with the outfit. The stylist will also advise you on what colour combination will suit your skin type.

What advice you give Sonam Kapoor, your elder sister?

She is mad about orange and red. Bright colours go very well with her bold personality. In general, shades of grey don’t suit the Indian skin type. So my simple advice to Sonam and all other girls out there is: Avoid greys as much as possible.

Who is more fashionable, your or your sister?

Since I am in the industry and know what is trending and what’s not, I am more fashionable. But Sonam is very comfortable in whatever she wears. That makes her a killer. She can carry even the craziest of clothes with elan. I am different. I need everything to be correct.

How about your dad?

He is the coolest guy when it comes to dressing. Like Sonam, he too, has his own sense of style that he feels strongly about. And as long as he carries it off well, there is no harm. I admire him for his dedication with which he has shaped his career. He is fit as a fiddle and very forthcoming about taking up a challenging role.

What advise have you been giving to these would-be brides?

You may buy attire worth Rs 1 crore but if you are not comfortable in it, you are going to look funny. I tell the bride to focus on her shoes first. Personally, I prefer Anuradha Vakil for an Indian attire and Anamika Khanna for a western wedding dress. As for a daring bride look, I will always go with Manish Malhotra.
