Fashion Lessons From Princess Di

On the occasion of what would be her 55th Birthday this year, we list style lessons that made Princess Diana so iconic. The Princess of Wales embraced the all kind of trends from the 80’s puffy sleeves to the 90’s colour blocking but always kept true to her personal style and that is what makes her such a remarkable style icon.

  • Endearingly called People’s Princess, Diana was a humanitarian over a style icon and so she wore practical choices rather than opt for glamorous gowns when doing philanthropic field work. Her typical work attire would be a white shirt and chinos.
  • One of her most unique qualities was her smile which could light up the world. That smile was her best accessory and nothing could replace that.
  • One of the greatest elements of her personal style was wearing a simple silhouette. Elegant and well-tailored blouses and jackets with clean cuts added certain sophistication to her attire.
  • One of her most talked about ensembles included the taffeta meringue silk dress with 25 feet long train at her wedding which proved to be the longest train in royal wedding history.
  • Princess Diana chose demure outfits with delicate details on them. She wore clothes with luxe materials, laces and intricate details. Like the high collar ‘Elvis Dress’ designed by her friend Catherine Walker which was elegantly encrusted with crystal and pearls.
  • Diana could easily pull off oversize hats which not many people can do. She graciously adorned different kinds of hats paired with her outfits. She also experimented with the pillbox hat inspired by Jackie Kennedy.
  • Princess Di always wore colours of a country or the appropriate style of a country during official state visits.
  • She often wore strong shouldered pieces but with subtle features such as monochrome outfits, this asserted her power but balanced her kind nature.
  • The princess’ growing self-assurance was reflected in her style as they were more bold and confident. Her most famous public outfit was the baring black dress aka the 'revenge dress’ which she wore to the Serpentine Gallery the evening when Prince Charles’ publicly confessed to adultery.

Here are other royal fashion icons to be inspired by

Kate Middleton – The Duchess of Cambridge channels Princess Diana’s style through and through and even adorns the famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring worn by Diana.

Grace Kelly – Iconic Grace of Monaco, wife of Rainier III prince of Monaco and American actress.

Queen Rania - Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, wife of King Abdullah II of Jordan

Queen Letizia – Queen of Spain and wife of King Felipe VI
