Six-yr-old Becomes Mumbai’s First Woman Candidate Master

Suhaani Lohia has underlined her status as a chess prodigy by becoming the city's first female candidate master (WCM). She speaks on her achievement

Q How did you start playing chess?
My elder brother, Siddhanth Lohia, also plays chess and has won numerous tournaments at the state and international level. I have been inspired by my brother. I started playing at the age of four.

Q What do you like the most about chess?
I like chess because it is a mental sport. I like thinking of deep moves and combinations, and I always try to outwit my opponents by laying traps for them. I love the way the Queen moves on the chessboard.

Q Do you feel nervous during a match?
My parents have always encouraged me to just play with concentration and give my best, and not to worry about the results. So, I do not feel nervous.

Q Whom do you consider the coolest rival in chess, both whom you have defeated and lost to?
The coolest rival I have played against is Afruza Khamdamova from Uzbekistan. Afruza won the Gold medal in this tournament in Iran and is a very strong chess player.
