Review: Assassins Creed Chronicles India

The historical setting of Assassins Creed has always been the biggest crowd puller of any Assassins Creed game. Set in various era's on different continents, the game actually lets you live those times as an Assassin. India has always been high on the list of era's that fans have been wishing for. And now Ubisoft has finally come out with an Assassins game set in India, but don't party just yet, it's really not what you expect.

Assassins Creed Chronicles is an offshoot of the Assassins Creed series, telling the same stories, but exploring different gameplay and level design. Instead of open world, go anywhere, be an assassin, you get a 2.5D, semi 3D semi 2D side scroller. With it's architecture and feel, Chronicles India will give you a distinct feel of being in a Mario game or the Mirror's Edge iPad game, where you can not only run sideways but also move through multi level stages.

The setting is Amritsar in 1841, at the height of the Sikh Empire's conflict with the East India Company, where you play an assassin called Arbaaz Mir. His mission is to recover a powerful artifact belonging to the Assassins Brotherhood, an artifacts known to us as the Koh-i-noor Diamond. Arbaaz's journey takes him across ancient Punjab as he freeruns across lush palaces and landscapes while being stealthy at the same time.

Assassins Creed Chronicles India lacks the depth you would come to expect from an Assassins Creed game. The architecture is mostly for level convenience than historic and yes, the guards do speak Punjabi that adds to the immersiveness. However, it seems like a powerful setting has been wasted. The game looks decent though, with dashes of colour and stylistic elements sprucing up the lackluster level design a bit.

The gameplay is decent, with a lot more emphasis on platforming and stealth. While fun, it's annoying when you see that death screen, a lot. What was great about the normal Assassins Creed was the fun you get when you hide and wait until everything blew over. After a point, Chronicles India just feels like a mundane chore you are slogging through.
If you liked the Assassins Creed: Brahmin comic book and want more of Arbaaz Mir or are a very big fan of the series then Chronicles is for you. With a nice setting and a well thought out set of stealth mechanics that don't seem to be implemented well in practice in the level design. Let's hope the third game in the Chronicles Trilogy overcomes all these.

Wow! this is so exciting! The previous Assassins Creed games have also been flawless. Their graphics, combat and location is also awesome. But it is also the first time when an Assassins creed game"s location is in India.

It would be better if UBISOFT made a main installment of Assassin''s Creed based on Ancient India ( Well, Ancient India is more Interesting than the mediaval times for a Assassin''s Creed ) . The Reviews of Assasin''s Creed Origins was positive and the previous Installment Assassin''s Creed Unity surrendered its launch because its bugs and issues . and the next Assassin''s Creed Syndicate was better but the sales were low due to the loss of reputation done by Unity .
