No More Compromises With Your Privacy And Personal Information

BlackBerry DTEK50 claims to be the world’s most secure Android smartphone

BlackBerry has a brand new smartphone, which may come as a bit of a surprise as the Canadian firm continues to struggle in the choppy hardware waters, and the BlackBerry DTEK50 harnesses a more traditional approach in an attempt to steady the ship while claiming to be the world’s most secure Android smartphone.
BlackBerry has added its own privacy and security features from BB 10 and BES 10 to Google’s offering already built into Android to make the platform even more secure. This gives users of the DTEK50 secure voice calls, text messages and file sharing capabilities, while the DTEK app allows you to control and monitor security and privacy on the handset.

Promising performance
On paper things look promising too, with the DTEK50 featuring a 5.2-inch full HD display, Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 13MP rear camera, 2610mAh battery and microSD slot wrapped up in a 147 x 72.5 x 7.4mm, 135g body. These aren’t flagship specs, but there should be enough grunt under the hood to make light work of Android on-screen. The power/lock key resides on the left of the handset, while the volume rocker on the right is joined by a centralised round button, which BlackBerry calls the ‘action key’. It’s reminiscent of Sony’s power/lock key on its Xperia devices, and at first it’s a little confusing, as it looks to be the more obvious power option.

Intelligent keyboard
DTEK50 has a smart keyboard designed to learn from users and increase typing accuracy and speed. It provides word suggestions as you type and includes up to three languages, letting you flick them into place for faster conversations. Without a physical keyboard the DTEK50 sports a more socially acceptable design compared to the odd-ball Passport and sliding Priv. It’s not exactly premium metal and glass, but the sturdy polycarbonate body should sit nicely in the hand — at least, that’s how it appears. In fact, this is a programmable button that enables you to access an oft-used app, task or function of your choosing.

Quick verdict
BlackBerry promises a “very reasonable price point” for the DTEK50, which translates to a $299 tag. It’s not going to wow you with its design, or blow you away with flagship features, but what you do get is a phone which fully encrypts all your data, makes it easy for you to monitor your privacy, and ensures everything is secure. We’re looking forward to putting the DTEK50 through our in-depth review process — and we hope it can live up to this promising start.
