The Rajini Phenomenon!

Rajini mania is back! With ‘Kabali’ slated to release in more than 4,000 screens worldwide today, Rajini fans have gone crazy over their ‘Thalaivar’ (boss). Expectedly, the demand for tickets will make the film’s producers laugh all the way to the bank. “Most theatres across Tamil Nadu have sold out tickets for the opening weekend. With an average ticket costing `600, most ardent Rajini fans are disappointed that they will not be able to afford the tickets on the first day,” trade analyst Trinath said. Despite the state government’s cap of `120 on movie tickets, theatre owners have been selling ‘Kabali’ tickets at five times  the price. That’s not surprising. Kabali has become a brand in itself.

 Why Rajini is ‘worshipped’

People in the south worship Rajinikanth because of the over-the-top characters he plays. He has always had this larger-than-life image and so, people see him as their ‘God’. The fact that people get a holiday on the day of his film’s release speaks volumes about his popularity. People put garlands around his posters and go to see his movies on the first day because he is probably the only big hero they have in their films.

I consider him to be the style mogul. The quality my friends and I admire the most about him is his humility. His journey from a bus conductor to a star performer is iconic. Despite that, he has no qualms about being seen without his make-up in public space. That is the glory of this self-made man.

His typical ‘rags-to-riches’ story appeals a lot to the common man; his fans look at him as an ordinary person who does extraordinary things on the screen. Also, Indians in the south tend to worship the the actors they love, resulting in this mass hysteria. Consider the case of actress Khusboo who, too, has a temple dedicated in her name.

Style on screen and simplicity off screen! This is what defines Rajni and makes him such a phenomenon. In his films he has a larger-than-life persona. There is plenty of action and even some romance to keep the audience happy. But off screen, he has remained simple and humble. You see him in a clean shirt and dhoti, without fancy goggles or any such accessory. He is involved in a lot of charity. When he is at public functions, he does not promote his films. Instead, he talks about our culture and heritage. So overall he is someone people like. The older generation likes his simplicity, while the youth loves all the action on screen.

There is nothing that can explain the phenomenon around Rajini. He is something more than just ‘special’. The fame of people like Sachin Tendulkar and Rajini is beyond human comprehension. Just as Dhoni can single-handedly get the Indian team to win a match in the final overs, Rajini can turn his films into blockbusters. He has the guy next door image which connects him to people around him. What’s more, he has no pretensions. People know that this is what their superstar looks like in real life. He started his life as a conductor, among the crowd, whistling for the public. Now the public is doing it for him!
Bosskey, Actor-cum-stand-up comedian

The hype that has been created around Rajini sir is akin to a glass palace. Many people have contributed to it so that they can get a glimpse of themselves in the mirror and bask in borrowed glory. They have succeeded in garnering attention till now. All this is fine till the time the movie is declared a hit. In case the movie fails, only Rajini sir’s image will take a beating. Let’s hope the movie is a blockbuster so that the man who helped people get easy publicity has a bigger innings in filmdom.
Meha Srividhya, filmmaker

His journey is a role model for a rags to riches story. From an economically backward family background to a bus conductor and then a champion, Rajini’s story is inspiring for people who follow him. When people look at him on the big screen they see themselves in him. He has inspired a generation of youngsters by motivating them to chase their dreams and make them a reality. If he can manage it, others can too. This is why he is a big phenomenon in the south and now, all over India and abroad.
