Superheroes Clash

Why seeing a hero vs hero battle is more thrilling than a traditional  combat with villains...

As Marvel and DC’s Cinematic Universe gets more and more crowded,  the line between a superhero and a superhero (yes, that’s right) gets blurred. In 2012’s ‘The Avengers’, Captain America and Iron Man traded blows with Thor.  In ‘Ant-Man’ (2015) the hero fights Falcon. Iron Man gets into an ugly duel with Hulk in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. And in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War, almost half the superheroes’ will fight the other half in a battle for supremacy.

Who is stronger?

We love to see our superheroes fight each other because of one basic reason – in a world peopled by more than one superhero, which superhero will win? Fans love pondering over hypothetical scenarios. And why not? Our superhero universe is replete with characters who are no less than demi gods. Who’s stronger, Superman or Hulk? You decide! What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?” We are emotionally invested in our superheroes and root for them – just as we do for our favourite sports team. We want them to win, and justify our fandom. It doesn’t matter to fans that both the parties stand for ‘good’. British actor Henry Cavill who plays Superman, in ‘Batman v. Superman’ had said in an interview, “There’s always been that little tête-à-tête between Batman and Superman and there’s always been that question among fans: who will win in a fight?,” So when movies like ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’ provide answers to our hypothetical queries, we are forced to think.

Emotional turmoil

In ‘The Avengers’, Black Widow fights with his longtime partner and comrade, Hawkeye without batting an eyelid. In ‘Batman v. Superman’, the Dark Knight doesn’t feel any regret when fighting Superman. But if you are a fan of Justice League comics, you know that the Dark Knight goes through an emotion upheaval when facing off with Superman. In a battle between two superheroes, we see sadness and regret in their eyes just as you would expect in a fight between two people who care for each other.

Creative fights

One of the best scenes in ‘The Avengers’ is arguably the one in which Hulk takes on Loki, repeatedly smashing him on the floor. When you have to choreograph a fight between a hero and a villain the job of the filmmakers/stunt coordinators becomes easy. They have the liberty to sidestep, humiliate, or even kill the villain. But when it comes to an intra-hero battle, there are several limitations. The challenge for the filmmaker is to showcase both heroes’ powers, make both look cool and let both walk away with dignity. In ‘Ant-Man’ (2015) the protagonist emerges victorious against Falcon. But the fight was choreographed in a way that didn’t show Falcon in poor light. The superhero must not come across as arrogant or unlikeable.

Heroes don’t lose

We know that heroes can’t lose. They can suffer serious setbacks, get bruised, fail temporarily but in the end they will fight back and win. But when you pitch them against other heroes who also have unbroken winning streaks, it becomes a different ballgame altogether. We know that the two caped crusaders are not going to murder each other outright in Batman v Superman. Neither will Captain America and Iron Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. So how are the writers going to weave an enthralling story keeping all the limitations in mind? How are they going to make all the characters appear ‘victorious’? Who is going to win? Every scriptwriter must face these questions.

Drawbacks

The need for every hero to come out unscathed from the battle may hamper the film’s creativity. Also, there is no cathartic effect in superhero fights as we have seen in ‘Batman vs Superman’. In the end it’s all about making sure that all superheroes return to their respective worlds (universe) – with their pride intact.
