Now That's Make-Up

Ever thought of being an actor when you grow up? It’s not just about the fame and recognition anymore. It’s the new challenge of being able to emote even when you are beneath layers of uncomfortable prosthetics, heavy wigs and coloured lens. An inspiration you can definitely emulate for your next performance!

Jared Leto Suicide Squad (2016)

In April 2015, Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto surfaced online to reveal his Joker avatar for the upcoming film ‘Suicide Squad’. His body was uniformly pale, heavily tattooed, his once long brunette hair cut short and dyed green. Heath Ledger last played the iconic supervillain character before his suicide.

Brad Pitt The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

The character of Benjamin Button transforms from 0 to 8O years by using a heavy dose of vfx and special effects. In fact, the first 52 minutes of the epic motion picture feature the head of Brad Pitt's character created via computer generated imagery. To look like a senior citizen, Pitt was caked in make-up, he also had to wear a prosthetic nose and scalp. For much of the film, special techniques were used to capture Pitt’s micro facial expressions which were superimposed on the body of different actors who played Pitt at different ages. The otherwise handsome Pitt only emerged towards the end of the film.

Rishi Kapoor Sanam Re (2016)

Rishi Kapoor will be seen as an 80-yearold man in Divya Khosla Kumar’s film, ‘Sanam Re’. Sceptical of playing even a father’s role in films in the past, Kapoor will be seen as Pulkit Samrat’s grandfather in the movie. The veteran actor, who plays the character of a photo studio owner in Tanakpur in this film set in the 80s, took 4-5 hours to get his make-up done every day. He shared the look on his Twitter account. What say?

Amitabh Bachchan
Paa (2009)

Big B was transformed from a 67-year-old to a 13-year-old boy suffering from progeria by Hollywood make-up artists Christien Tinsley (‘The Passion of Christ’) and Dominie Till (‘The Lord of the Rings’). The make-up alone took five hours to put (daily) during which eight different layers of clay were put on Bachchan’s face. The actor could not drink or eat anything at that time as he was made to wear specially designed dentures, in a bid to sound like a 13-year-old. The entire make-up reportedly cost 10 per cent of the total budget of the film.

Vikram, I (2015)

South Indian star Vikram spent close to five hours in the make-up room every day to transform into his beastly avatar, which was created and executed by New Zealand-based company WETA Workshop credited with films like ‘The Hobbit’and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. In addition to the make-up, Vikram, inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger, worked hard to get the hair style right. If you haven’t watched this film, watch it now.
