Cinematic Experience

Not just visually appealing frames, a cinematographer must create an immersive experience for the viewer. Remember ‘gravity’? Pallav Pandey reports

Every movie has its uniqueness. Be it a picturesque location, or a climax moment, some movie shots are meant to blow your mind. Behind those breathtaking frames lies the work of a cinematographer. Take the case of the 2013 Sandra Bullock-George Clooney space saga, ‘Gravity’, where the theatrical experience is perhaps more exciting than the story itself. Thanks to Emmanuel Lubezski, who picked up the Oscar for Best Cinematography for the film it will be remembered for its special effects.

What you see on the movie screen is the director’s imagination put together by a cinematographer. He is the one who heads the camera crew working on a film or television and is responsible for selecting the camera, lens, filters, film stock and capturing a frame artistically.

However, a good cinematographer’s role isn’t just limited to the camera but also demands for understanding the script and its characters to the tee. Before the actual filming commences, the cinematographer discusses with the director how the script will be portrayed in the film. He inspects the location before shooting, to check the light and sound potential.

Next, the equipment is ordered and put to use. Once the shoot is over, the cinematographer reviews the shots with the director. If the film is appreciated due to its breathtaking sequences, all credit goes to the cinematographer who has created magic with his camera.

Roger deakins gives some tips

Get Experiences: One can't learn cinematography as it has to come from within. He believes that the job revolves around 'your way of looking at the world'.

Be Picky: He emphasises the need to be selective and take only those projects which you believe.

Importance of Lighting: The way lighting is done in a scene will reflect on how the audience will react to it. Bad lighting can mar an important scene.

Stay With the Character and Story: Allowing the characters and story to drive the narrative works well too.
