Diplomacy or Aggression: How To Tackle Terrorism?

“Those who cannot put their thoughts on ice should not enter into the heat of debate”. This quote clearly reflects the most difficult aspect of debating, which ultimately makes it an art. To promote this art St Jude’s School, Majra organised the Mindspree inter school English debate competition.

Debating on the contemporary subject ‘The answer to global terrorism lies in diplomacy and not aggression,’ the students of St Thomas’ College and the host school students enjoyed a healthy rivalry that resulted in headaches for the judges. Finally, the former was awarded with the winners’ trophy at the competition edging the hosts with a narrow margin, while Shri Ram Centennial School came third.

The debate organised in an extempore format gave the participants an hour of preparations and intricate discussion on what the topic implied as they prepared their arguments. The young and promising orators expressed their brilliance and unwavering conviction as they defended and opposed the topic. Everyone in the audience and the judges was left amazed at the thoroughness of their points and every twisted rebuttal question found an equally quick appropriate answer.

The various arguments pursued by Daniel Imbert from St Thomas’ College ranging from elaborate hypothesis to upcoming issues in society brought to him the award of ‘Best Speaker’. Neal Gardner from St Jude’s School enchanted everyone with his poise wisdom and knowledge and hence was declared to be the second best speaker. Serena Mann from St Thomas’ College won the judges over with her confidence, knowledge and demeanour and earned the position of third best speaker.

The chief guest Shailendra Benjamin congratulated the school for completing 25 years of excellence in education. He emphasised that debating is an art and it needs to be nurtured. It is a never ending skill that grows, matures.

At the culmination of the debate, school principal VR Gardner delivered the vote of thanks. The competition saw six schools from the city participate in the battle of brains and thoughts including Shemford Doon, Shri Ram Centennial School, St Thomas’ College, Unison World School and Wynberg Allen School.
